"Preserve Your Memories"
"....they're all that's left you". From Simon and Garfunkel, "Bookends".
So maybe it's time to send up a #signalflare ... and say that I've safely landed in a New World or two (Pluspora mostly, but also MeWe just for those who give me no choice for staying in contact, except Facebook or MeWe - no further comment.) I use my real name everywhere, so I'm not hard to find. Flickr too, for photography, which I've long loved (nice display, exif info, groups, albums, etc.) - and I am happy if people shun it as "not social enough" due to "no chat", emojis, etc. I like it as-is.
Aside from what may or may not be left standing on G+ (albums in Photos?), much of my photography and psychology is on my own website for 20+ years, a blessing: http://www.fenichel.com
And to end this "flare", I want to just boil down what I think - as both an individual and social scientist/psychologist - may be useful advice, though as it's easy to see (and I say endlessly) everyone's priorities, needs, and experience is different, from developers to promoters, to casual users, active community members/owners, and bloggers, to your individual thing....
It's now early February 2019, and they're dissembling the moorings of G+, like notifications (soon removing the widget) and soon thereafter, dropping a G-bomb to wipe out the whole thriving community. ("Don't be evil"? Hah!)
So first off, if anyone's just noticing or registering "the end", please read relevant posts "here". There's endless Q&A and current updates, and tips, on everything from "taking out" and migrating data, to advice on alternate platforms for your specific wants and needs. My belief is that no one place (as always) will ever match all that our "homeland" (here) does, and that for comfort in The New World probably more than one nest will be necessary to cover favorite activities now, from chat/"hangouts", to community shares and discussion, to promoting or just curating (for pleasure) photo or art collections, animated .gifs, whatever.
More importantly - and this is what inspired me to drop everything, send up this flare, and repeat this (having experience in working with refugees and also trauma) - Think about friends and family! Even if numbed out at the moment, that's just so important. You can re-build blogs and find (or maybe have) other places for professional or art or tech-related things, but most people 'here' have shared common threads over the years of interaction with friends, colleagues, and just plain interesting people or places all over G-plus-land.
Make those plans now if not earlier - to retain friendships and connections, in The New World
And... save what you can of that you most value -relationships and favorite things which will soon be memories. Save your photos, sketches, poems, etc. if they are nowhere else. Quickly. And have those discussions with friends we've made through so many great moments and relationships, as in any 'homeland' (many have even met their mate here!).
This may get me booted from this topic (so sue me, fire me from Google+ - and I'll just post it publicly, though without the signal flare or audience)....
I was just so moved by this song - and I know this is not the place for memes or cartoons, etc., and certainly don't want to encourage OT posting....
Maybe this will affect you as it did me (big & bittersweet). I think it may be an anthem for these end-times of G+, as people are migrating, and so many have already left. Nobody can say it better than this song. Make your plans with those you value from here in the homeland, to reconnect somewhere in the New World. Take what you can, what you must, to keep some souvenirs and happy times in a jar, because G+ is intent on erasing every one of many people's memories over many years.
So this is it:
"Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you". :(
