Memory Lane: the Google+ Early Access Community

Early Access FAQ
The Early Access program on Google+ allowed selected Google+ users to converse directly with Google+ staff. As a member of EA, this author appreciated the dialogs.

The substance of the conversations in EA was private. You can imagine, however, that the problems you had as a G+ user were brought before the EA Community in proportion to the frequency they were experienced by the general public.

EA participants had the ear of Google+ support staff, but not the Google or Alphabet administrators who made the decision to discontinue public Google+. The Early Access Community and its Google+ staff were as surprised as the general public to learn that public Google+ would be shut down.

The FAQ list below is derived from that which was published by Google to acquaint folks with the Early Access Community.

  • Interested in getting a sneak peek at new Google+ features?


In our Early Access program, we work[ed] closely with a small group of testers who [were] passionate
about Google+ products and want[ed] to help shape the future of the platform.

By joining Google+ Early Access, you [had] the chance to test our new features and give
your feedback directly to the Google+ team in a private Community of other Trusted Testers.
...Your account [was] whitelisted to give you access to features
that [had not] been released to the public yet. [Google+ staff announced] the early release of these features
in a dedicated Community for Early Access, and provide[d] a space to start a conversation
about the features including what’s working, what you like[d] or dislike[d], or what could use some
more work.


  • I just joined the Create program. How is Early Access different?


Google+ Create [was] an exclusive program to give the best content creators the recognition
and audience they deserve[d].


Examples of what [was posted] in Create: get to know each other, share your expertise and
help one another to grow, talk about how you post your content, what work and what doesn't,
which content creators inspire you and why, how to get a maximum of engagement,
what your biggest successes are, share your ideas to create engagement on G+
and any initiatives that make you happy, how you promote G+ to your network,
how you coach other users… anything related to your content, your passion and your will
to get better at what you do.


Google+ Early Access [was] a completely different Community, focused specifically
on the technical side of Google+ and the features that [Google+ staff were] testing out
before their public launch. Members [did] not share their own content or introduce themselves.   


Examples of what [was posted] in EA: report bugs/experience issues on web, Android and iOS,
suggest feature requests, discuss already existing features (and how they're awesome/need improvement),
 beta test features, brainstorm on how to improve the new UI, talk about SUL (Suggested Users List)
... anything technical.


  • Where do I sign up? (Sorry, you cannot sign up anymore!)


[DO NOT] Send an email to plus-create-team@google.com and mention your interest joining the Early Access Community.
You [will not] hear back from us within 1-2 weeks of signing up.
If for some reason you do not hear back, email Sophie... (Sophie Bonnet
was one of the outstanding G+ support staff. Her team listened to a multitude of complaints and
suggestions with patience and responded to all, even those that repeated themes that had been
discussed earlier.)


  • When [you were] in the Early Access Community, what [could you] do?


Read the pinned post to learn about the latest Google+ updates written by
one of our project managers or moderators. The Early Access Community offer[ed] information
on Android, Web, and IOS. Check the categories to view the relevant posts.
You [were] welcome to share your constructive comments and feedback.
