Check this out - it's a screenshot that I posted from my Pixel today. I can't believe how bad the image quality is! Believe me, it looked great on the phone (and still does). Is Google downgrading G+ capabilities already?

Tornado?

Comments

  1. sometimes when uploading images via the app, the quality drops
it's just an issue with G+, not the entirety of Google
edit: i misread what you said, but still this has been happening for a long time apparently, since before the announced shit-down

  2. This happened to me too a few days ago. I had to upload my picture from desktop instead to post it because uploading from phone turned the picture into something of shitty quality.

  3. It's also the first time I have ever seen a "take shelter now" tornado warning here in Massachusetts. For a minute, I thought I was in Kansas! 😂

  4. In the past I did have a few problems with uploading picture via the app but it was never this bad. Back then some of my pictures had their resolution reduced for no reason at all. This one however looks like a jpg file being compressed several times over. Artifacts all over the place.

  5. Halfey Halphstein This has happened to me several times, mainly on Hangouts, sometimes G+. It seems to happen when your connection is slow or bad. I think it re-encodes the image at a low quality level and tries to get at least something uploaded.

  6. The thing is, the screenshot is from a Pixel - a Google phone - to G+ - a Google service. And my Wi-Fi bars were maxed out when I uploaded it. So none of this makes a lot of sense.

  7. Phillip Landmeier Not sure if it's the connection problem because I'm in a big city with pretty good connection all the time. In fact my computer is tethered to my phone for internet connection. Uploading from computer is fine and fast but from the phone gave different result.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Halfey Halphstein I dunno. It seems to me it happens when it's taking ten minutes to upload one simple photo.

    ReplyDelete
  9. That artifacting is the result of JPEG compression. It is pretty normal to look like that when you have fine text on a solid background. It is caused by the nearest neighbor averaging. Look it up. No need for conspiracy theories.

  10. John C. Reid I'm pretty sure everyone commenting in thread knows about jpg artifacts but something as bad as this only happens recently. We've uploaded thousands of pictures to G+ but never seen something at this level before.

  11. This has been happening for a long time, certainly for a year or more. it may have to do with the type of connection you have - if you're on a metered connection it will compress the image to a smaller file size, with artifacts on sharp edges as a result.

I've generally solved it by deleting and uploading again later, and usually it uploads fine the next time.

  12. Jan Moren In my case I still can't attribute it to connections because my phone and computer uses the same connection. Apparently deleting and reuploading didn't work for me. I ended up transferring my picture to my computer and do the upload from desktop instead. Most pictures turned up fine, only a few were affected by this 'bug'.

  13. I have had several contacts seeing the same problem lately. AFAIK it was never permanent and only appeared on Android phones...

  39. This happened to me in the past few days as well. Both times I shared a photo from Google Photos to G+. It looks like this involves a download to and a subsequent upload from the phone, which, in my opinion, is a WTF in itself.

    ReplyDelete
  40. This has happened for years when uploading from the app. If you use Google photos to back up your photos, then often if this happens, the next time you connect to a wireless network it backs up the photo and the post gets updated with the full resolution version.

    ReplyDelete
  41. If it didn't fix itself after a few hours or days then it's a different 'bug'.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Michael Warburton In my cases it did not update, even though the original photo in Google Photos has full resolution.

  48. I think I've found the cause for this issue, or at least a cumbersome workaround.

This problems seems to occur when you select the photo from the image previews of most recent images, in the mobile interface. If you instead select All Photos and then navigate to the actual image, and select it from there, it will upload the actual full-size image.

I'm guessing that when you select it from the list of recent images, it will instead if getting a reference to the full-size image file, use the thumbnail-size one used to display it in the recent images drawer.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Filip H.F. Slagter I tried that. Still the same result.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Halfey Halphstein strange. Anyway, I've submitted the following feedback through the Send Feedback option from the top right : options menu in the app:

Thumbnail Quality when uploading photos via Google+ App
Several users, including me, are reporting thumbnail quality/sized photos when uploading them to posts or comments through the Google+ App, rather than the original high resolution and hiqh quality photos selected.
For me personally this issue seems to specifically occur when I select the image from the 'recent images drawer', i.e. the list of (recent) images that appears when you click the 'add image' button.
If however I click on the 'All photos' item and then navigate to the right folder and select the image from there, I will get the high resolution photo in my post.
It is as if the app uses the thumbnail used to display in the recent images drawer when selected from there, rather than a reference to the original full-size source image.

While the workaround of selecting the photo through 'All photos' (though cumbersome as it requires more taps than should be necessary) works for me, unfortunately other users are reporting this still doesn't fix the issue for them.

Note: I've disabled the image compression setting in the Google+ App's settings, though this does not fix the issue by itself.

Note 2: the thread on Google+ from where I submitted this feedback (and which is shown in the screenshot), has reports from other users who are experiencing the same issue.

The next time you again run into that problem, I suggest you also use the Send Feedback option right away, so they maybe can find some useful data to debug the issue.
