I've been enjoying Liker for the past few weeks, troll-free thus far. It's a new start-up so it's still quite small, but very promising.

  1. That was from the "Try Liker" link on the frontpage.

The "Trending Feed" link on that error page does work though. It's filled with so much politics though, that I'll just turn around again.

  2. Laura Ess Works fine for me. Just checked.

  3. It's actually unavailable in some countries thus the timeout error.

  4. Halfey Halphstein Ah, I live in Australia. that explains it.

  5. I can't find out who they are, but according to their Privacy page they use targeted advertising.

  6. Al Tlön Thank you. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm not interested in any social media which has an explicit political bias - no matter which side they're for.

  7. So far I've seen claims that both Minds and MeWe are Alt something or another. On the ideal social media, it wouldn't matter, because you'd see what you wanted to see.

  8. Laura Ess I have seen those claims to, but they are based on the presence of extreme views on those sites. I've seen no evidence that either Minds or MeWe are owned by anyone with connections to a political party or movement.

On the other hand, the owners of Like are explicitly part of a political faction, and are linked to one of the major parties. Apart from the fact that that seems to detract from the ability of the service to be impartial, it also doesn't bode well for its longevity. I'd be surprised if it lasted 2 years.

  9. Peter Maranci While you're probably correct about the owners of Minds and MeWe, the prominent existence of alt.right/Proud Boys/4chan/etc. contingents on those platforms are enough to keep me away. Liker apparently falls into the "stay away" category as well.

All this investigation of our available options is mainly serving to remind me how close G+ has been to perfect for the ways I want to interact with people via social media, and how everything else falls short. And the conversation hasn't even begun including photography, and how well this platform displays it.

  10. Pat Kight I don't know, have you noticed how bad photographs have gotten on Google Plus in the last few days? I posted a screenshot from my pixel, and it came out looking like something on an Etch-a-Sketch. Well, not quite. But still shockingly bad.

  11. Peter Maranci The choice is yours of course, but I wouldn't dismiss Liker completely. There are plenty on non-political posts and the response overall has been very civil and friendly.
