Though I doubt it's a fully vetted list, it has the link to each platform and is a helpful reference.
I also offer a Google Plus Meetup Group on Facebook for any interested.

Many of the apps shouldn't be in the list. Who the hell put Kickstarter in there?
ReplyDeleteCrowd sourcing, hook up and communication apps? Really?
ReplyDeleteI couldn't even get past the second page. Couldn't stand to see more of the "not social media" in the following pages.
ReplyDeleteHalfey Halphstein Who compiled this list? You should read their loosey goosey definition of “social network”.
ReplyDeleteLinda Tewes No idea. Whatever I think the list on Wikipedia is more acceptable than this.
ReplyDeleteI've been researching the list of soc net sites too. I am beginning to see that in order to make sense of all the sites, a simple descriptive framework is needed, both technical and cultural aspects.
ReplyDeleteSoftware architecture has gotten so mature that there is a general basic framework all sites use parts of. So, you can group the list of soc net sites more or less how completely they provide the basic soc net tech framework.
FB and G+ being on the high end, MeWe and Diaspora aspiring to be fairly rich in services, Instagram and Snapchat etc provide the basic services but are mobile photo oriented. Twitter and Mastodon staking out the fewer and looser services mode of operation giving them that tweet quality.
Tumblr actually has basic soc net features, but it's main characteristic is its historic community.
Which brings up the second main category scheme for social nets, the nature of their established or initial base of people. However, that's not so easy to characterize. For example FB and real life friends, or G+ and its techno/nerd crowd, or the free speech communities, or token-based communities, and on and on. Likely fact it's the cultural dimension that is most important in choosing a new network to be part of.
So this huge list really would benefit from some organization.
Maybe we could all move to eBay comments. Or perhaps Amazon review pages for fictitious algorithmically generated products with artificially inflated prices used for money laundering. They're both "Social".
ReplyDeleteJulian Bond For a very loose definition of social media, I'm surprised they left out Github. I think they should throw Airbnb and hotel booking apps in there too /s
ReplyDeleteHeh...well, at least I supplied some comic relief ;)
ReplyDeleteHalfey Halphstein GitLab is actually one of my own primary targets.
