I hate to say this, but I've been expecting Google to terminate Google Groups for years. They used to have it on their main search menu. Now it's buried.
ReplyDeleteOf course UseNet will still exist, but I'm not sure if any communities created by Google Groups will be. It's also going to be a real bitch to reach Usenet groups once Google is out of the picture. Most of the big ISPs don't carry UseNet, as far as I know.
Peter Maranci The Tasker announcement (posted immediately after this one) specifically addresses continuity of GG as a concern for not choosing that.

Google groups was downgraded to little more than an e-mail list manager nearly a decade ago.
ReplyDeleteIt used to be more of an e-mail based community environment with shared files and resources and a more elaborate web interface.
Edgar Brown Yet another case of Google not standing behind their products.
ReplyDeleteGG are heavily used by G itself, and I think G cancelling GG would create a huge backlash from the tech communities that use it very heavily indeed.
