Not my first rodeo: More social alternatives: Nightweb, Tent.io, Buddycloud, StatusNet

Not my first rodeo: More social alternatives: Nightweb, Tent.io, Buddycloud, StatusNet

On 22 November 2013, I'd written of four prospective and open social technologies:

Nightweb (https://nightweb.net/)

Nightweb connects your Android device or PC to an anonymous, peer-to-peer social network. You can write posts and share photos, and your followers will retrieve them using BitTorrent running over the I2P anonymous network. It is still experimental and not well-tested, but the goal is to have uncensorable, untraceable communication and file-sharing on mobile devices and PCs.

Join the discussion on /r/Nightweb and read the blog.

Tent.io (http://tent.io)

Tent lets you control your data instead of handing it over to service and app providers. Just like email, you choose a Tent provider or can set up your own Tent server. Tent data and relationships are portable so you can change Tent providers easily at any time. Also like email, all Tent users are first class citizens, no matter what provider they use: you can communicate in real time with any user on any provider.

Buddycloud (http://buddycloud.com/)

We have rethought the architecture of social networks. Instead of traditional centralised models our design principle is to distribute control. Each site runs its own buddycloud server. Users connect and share information with other users on other sites.

StatusNet (http://status.net/) Associated with identi.ca. I can't find a concise summary of what it is (hey, Status.net people: write a fucking "about" page).

The present score as I attempt those links:

* Nightweb.net is entirely offline.
* tent.io has an expired cert.
* Buddycloud.com is online, with a featureful page.
* Status.net is online, though without much information.

Presented less as alternatives than to note that the longevity of even open solutions may be quite limited. That's a 50% mortality rate in five years. And in terms of true viability -- Buddycloud looks to be more infrastructure than an actual social solution -- 0 for 4.

  1. I've been on StatusNet for a VERY long time (predates G+). Back then it was very much a open source alternative to Twitter. Don't know how it's like today. Haven't logged in in years.

  2. Edward Morbius Thanks for continuing your research! There is much to learn from history. It cycles faster on the internet than in real life.

  3. Jeff Diver I prefer to think of this as a part of real life. Though yes, there's a lot of abandoned exploration to consider.

  4. I created a new StatusNet account just now (my old account probably have been deleted due to inactivity). Compared to its past "Twitter alternative" it now looks and functions more like Slack.

Edit: Forgot to mention that it's now business-oriented and there's a paid upgrade available too.

  5. Edward Morbius you deserve a medal or at least a bicoin for your heroic efforts.

  6. Lev Osherovich I'm gunning for a Crucifixion.

  7. Edward Morbius stick with the Crucifacts.

  8. Lev Osherovich We're asking the Cruciquestions.
