There's been a recent update post from DiasporaHQ on new features, which seems semi-inspired by the recent influx of G+ expats:

The announcement seems to be taken with a spoonful of scorn in some parts of the Fediverse/ActivityPub world:

Also burried in that thread and semi-related: Hubzilla might lose federation capabilities with Diaspora in the future:

"Zap and Osada will not be providing the Diaspora protocol as an option. It is also somewhat unlikely Hubzilla will be able to continue federating with Diaspora when it is upgraded to Zot6. I'll try to preserve the current federation options, but it does not look promising."

  1. Hopefully there's be an 11th hour effort to resolve the differences and they all stay in the Fed.

  2. Well that would be a shame. I've been trying out Hubzilla this week and the extra features over Diaspora are great.

That said, the number of Hubzilla users seems much lower and I've had very little interaction on posts made there. Same goes for Friendica.

Diaspora on the other hand I've had nice friendly interaction on posts and a lot of likes. Diaspora really seems like it will be the place for me.

Still yet to try MeWe or Minds.

  3. I suspect that those of us who go the Federated route may become Very Familiar with the Divers and Partikular aspects of Protocol Negotiation.

(And I'm not talking TCP handshakes here, secret or otherwise.)

  4. Edward Morbius as for protocol peculiarities, there's an interesting albeit a bit technical interview with Mike Macgirvin, the guy behind Hubzilla and the Zot protocol:

    https://medium.com/we-distribute/got-zot-mike-macgirvin-45287601ff19.

His take on Diaspora, ActivityPub and its implementation in Mastodon is a bit ... disheartening (but at least for d* in line with what little impressions I got from my brief looks at their code and issue trackers).

Also, his vision of the federation space and the resulting Zot protocol is quite interesting:

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's too much traction behind it (and after having created two previous social projects only to move on, I can see why peoply might be a bit loathe to invest there...)

Perhaps one reason for this phenomenon is that at least one of the HubZilla nodes has a copycat-like name that sounds like an imitation Google+: GogglePlus (see https://goggleplus.online/register).

What I don't understand is why the architects of that site couldn't have named it "GoogolPlus" (as opposed to "GooglePlus": Notice the last three characters of the "Googol" portion), instead.

"Goggle" sounds like a misspelling of "Goggles." Conversely, "Googol," which means "1^(100)" (a 1 followed by a hundred 0's) (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googol) sounds like a correctly-spelled version of "Google."

At the very least, they could have named it "Googolplex" (1^(1^(100))) (a 1 followed by a googol zeroes) (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googolplex).

Personally, I just can't imagine a site named "GogglePlus" succeeding; the name sounds too much like a copycat version of "Google+." The architects could at least have been slightly more imaginative.
