Welcome to the new Google+

Welcome to the new Google+
Wow... this feels... surreal...
I must've never visited this Collections page before from this account, I guess?
Got this Welcome to the new Google+ right now after logging in again on an old MacBook Pro I hadn't been using for quite some time...

Seeing it called 'new Google+' while they recently announced shutting it down... just feels... wrong...

  1. Like they're rubbing our faces in it.

  2. the url of the page I was on when I got it, is in the address bar in the screenshot.
It's not actually a new Google+; it's just an old intro modal that showed up for me, likely because I'd never visited the plus.google.com/collections/featured page before when it was first introduced. I thought that was clear from my original post, but I guess not.

I probably never visited the Featured Collections page before because in general the featured content on GPlus never really tickled my fancy...

  3. lol It has certainly been some years since you logged into G+!

  4. well, I've used G+ daily/weekly for the past years, but I just never visited that specific page. I only followed collections from people I already knew on G+.

  5. Filip H.F. Slagter strange that Google didn't force you to it like it did me.

  6. Shelenn Ayres for the past years I've mostly been using the Android app, which had a far more consistent user experience.

  7. Filip H.F. Slagter ah that is likely why... desktop users have a far different experience

  8. This seems to be a 'thing' as I logged on with my PC (usually I'm on my mac) and I got a popup survey for how satisfied I am with G+. You can imagine my expression I'm sure.
Astonished to still be receiving suggestions of who to follow. tbh. As an aside, one of my educational Collections was featured in that section, which gave me a huge influx of followers, for whom I worked hard - only for Google to pull the rug out from under me... Still looking for a suitable home for it.

  9. Aakheperure Merytsekhmet (self-)hosted blog perhaps to which you can already start driving traffic now from not only G+, but a wide variety of other platforms such as Twitter, Mastodon, Diaspora*, Friendica, Hubzilla, MeWe, Minds, etc?
Take control over your own data again and start syndicating it?

  10. Filip H.F. Slagter Your suggestion of using 'not quite fit for that purpose' social media accounts to drive traffic to the re-imagined educational Collection as a self hosted blog is an excellent one, and something I hadn't really thought about. I've also seen writers from my field working on Patreon but since I'm most likely heading back to study next year that may not be sustainable until I graduate (again).
Thank you for that, great food for thought!

  11. Aakheperure Merytsekhmet you could either use your previous posts in your collection to kickstart your blog with a nice big archive, or consider using them to fill in gaps in a regular publication schedule. Or maybe even revisit some of them, to see what new insights time and application have brought to the subjects. :)

  12. Filip H.F. Slagter Wow great suggestions, I've been scratching my head with the whole takeout thing to make an archive but revisiting in the light of new evidence and analysis is a great idea because that happens all the time in Egyptology.

  13. Aakheperure Merytsekhmet an hour ago I read an interesting article about the Leitner Box and other flashcards systems for remembering factoids and more complex information: https://ncase.me/remember/
It also mentioned the TinyCards app by DuoLingo, which allows users to create their own flashcard collections, and share them with the TinyCards community.
Based on a quick look at your posts, I think you could create a nice interaction between your (new self-hosted) collections, and the TinyCards community by creating a set of flashcards for each post in your collection, to help remember the most important lessons/facts from each post.

  14. Filip H.F. Slagter Wow that is awesome, I'd long been trying to work out the best ways to make infographics for a wide audience based on factual info, and only managed to do one (I think!) but it all seemed a bit daunting and time consuming in terms of how to actually set it up in a manageable way. I've bookmarked your suggestions and will go through each one carefully, thank you so much for taking the time to assist me with this - I was thinking my art posts could find a home somewhere like Ello, but the Egyptology ones didn't seem a good fit with any of the suggestions I'm seeing discussed in this Community. While I'm reasonably tech savvy, the closure of G+ has pushed me right out of my comfort zone so I do really appreciate the help and advice you have given!

I’ve also got a pluspora, but not really doing much with it.

Thanks loads for the memory method, Filip H.F. Slagter. Hope life is treating you well.

  18. I was gonna say it gets better, but, well, nope, they just start pulling on different parts as they age :D There are benefits in exchange for the pre-parent sleep patterns though, as well you now know :P

  19. Ted Ewen Fortunately I've always been a bit of a nocturnal.

It's funny, I've been a lot more active on GPlus since they announced its closure, lol.

  20. I too. The mad scramble not to lose touch with the magic that is this....

  21. Filip H.F. Slagter The three specific incidents that most boosted my G+ activity were its its closure, Vic's departure, and its initial beta. In about that order.
