I am using Steemit for 10 month now. Not as long as Minds.
Steemit itself is only one front end for the underlying http://steem.io blockchain, dapps and steem cryptocurrency. Unlike Minds both blockchain and cryptocurrency is a must. But also unlike Minds you can sell your Steem on various crypto exchanges. One Steem is currently at about one US$.
Since there are several front ends I like to explain the most important five.
⑴ https://steemit.com
This is standard bogging site which offer markdown rich text blogging. Here the posting I used as and example for Minds on Steemit:
https://steemit.com/deutsch/@krischik/schmiedeglut-gemuesemesser-damast-mooreiche
One can see that markdown offers more freedom in the design of your posting. On Minds I made separate postings for German and English. On Steemit I was able to to both in one posting.
⑵ https://busy.org/
Also a standard text blogging but with a nicer user more polished interface. This is the front end I use the most.
Same posting again but this time on Busy:

⑶ https://d.tube
A Youtube alternative on the basis of Steem.io. It uses IPFS to store the videos. Do note that storage isn't free on dTube. If your video get's enough upvotes it will pay for itself but if not then you will need to chip some Steem in or it will be taken down.
Or you run your own IPFS node. Then you decide yourself how long the video is up.
⑷ https://dsound.audio
A podcast and music site. I didn't use that one so I can't say much about it.
⑸ https://alpha.steepshot.io
A photo blog similar to Instagram. I uploaded of few cat pictures on that one and it was quite fun.
There are Android apps for Steemit, dTube and Steepshot.
All in all Steemit shows a lot potential especially since there are so many different frontends for it.
However, none of the front end offer communities or groups. It's all the dreaded search hashtags and you can't even save favourites hashtag like you can on GAB.
But who nows. Maybe Busy get around and fixes that.
There is also no chat function to speak off. Discord is used instead.
Steemit is open source and unlike minds there are quite a few Steemit clones floating about. I might write about those as well.
As all blockchains Steemit is also are distributed. But unlike GNUsocial or Diaspora the user never notices that. It's single sign on.
UPDATE 1:
Found another front end which can save favourite topics and favourite users:
https://steempeak.com/

If you have questions or which to discuss use:
ReplyDeleteplus.google.com - I could have sworn I made a Steemit posting. But it doesn't seem to be there....
