I've been checking out Minds.com I like the architecture, especially for the groups! It's pretty good, very similar features to the ones found here on G+ communities but...the site itself really isn't for people like me. Can anyone recommend a site that has the same/similar architecture as Minds but in a better 'neighborhood' so to speak?

  1. In what sense is it not for “people like you”? Can you give a more specific review?

  2. Edgar Brown Not an proponent of conspiracy theories and pseudoscience?

  3. Edgar Brown Sorry, I really, truly don't mean to cause offense. But the truth is I'm not really up for supporting/rubbing with (either in spent time or money) people who think wackadoodle conspiracy theories about several groups of people should be taken seriously. I have to deal with that in RL almost everyday, I don't want it in my face 24/7. On G+ I was/am able to navigate well enough that if it was there it wasn't a problem. But there...If I had to describe it lightly from what I've experienced in the short time I've spent there, it's like 4chan's /b/ with g+ architecture.

  4. nonie maylle If I have to move and lose some of the positive things about G+, I sure as hell don’t want to join a new Social Network that has all of the worst things of G+ at its core.

Content matters. Ownership matters. Ethics flow top down. Something FB and Twitter don’t get. The existing population of users matter. Which is why I presume nobody is suggesting we move to 4chan.

  5. Linda Tewes Had the same problem when I joined Minds and MeWe, long ago, so never became active, dormant account.
With the Plussers invasion, at least in MeWe, we already created a niche, so I don't see the quacks as much any more. :)

Focusing on MeWe now, we'll see for Minds later.

  6. Christian Nalletamby I'm not sure if other people can see my groups in MeWe. That said I haven't accepted your group invitation yet 😅

  7. Every social network is going to have questionable groups. The simple solution is to not join those groups or rub elbows with the people who don't provide you with interesting conversation. Start your own groups, moderate them well, and get well behaved people to join.

  8. nonie maylle in MeWe you only see content from people you follow or groups you join, nothing else. Isn’t that the case in Minds?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Minds is driven and supported by Alt Right and neo-nazis.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Edgar Brown Yes, of course it is. But I was more so referring to the administrators, not just the groups

    ReplyDelete
  11. Halfey Halphstein No we can't see what groups other people belong to, or who are their friends.

Compared to here, the "default" is "Private", and I'm not sure it is changeable!

  12. nonie maylle what type of community feel are you looking for?

    ReplyDelete
  13. nonie maylle I'm over on MeWe. If you search for groups, yes, there are zillions of wacko groups, most with 7 to 12 members. But you won't see or hear a peep from them unless you apply for membership in one of those groups and are accepted. I don't suppose you would do that.

Instead, join the plusser refugee groups and the groups that plussers are creating there. I'm having the same quality conversations, with some of the same people that I have here on G+. After all, it's the people that make it work.

Needless to say, with such an architecture, there is zero spam.

  14. Shelenn Ayres Preferably one that's neutral. But if a side had to be chosen, at worst it would be left to center, or at best, just not as welcoming to alt-right conspiracy theorists.

  15. Phillip Landmeier I'm in the process of checking out MEWe now.

  16. nonie maylle Friendica (which can view and friend people on other network types) will give you a nice interface with more power than G+ yet access a global community that is mostly left of center in the posts I've seen so far. IN any case, once you have an account on Friendica, you can control whose posts you see and don't see and vice versa.

Here is a look at the global public feed of diaspora, friendica, mastadon, hubzilla, etc network types that are all part of the federated social web:

  17. nonie maylle as of tonight, after the product director that runs MeWe stated he is a proud libertarian, you might want to rethink that.

  18. Shelenn Ayres I will explore it. Thanks!

  19. Shelenn Ayres great 😑 lol, Well the search continues. Anyways, thanks for the info. I'm already missing the days when things like this weren't an issue.

  20. I tried Sola and a couple of others, and have to say after G+, it is hard to find one that is as easy, add free and pretty useful out there.
I am sure there are sites out there, but I am having problem finding them. Will be looking into MeWe later

  21. I preferred the Minds UI to MeWe at first too, but the porn and boosted posts have turned me off. MeWe is actually really growing on me as I figure out how to use it. There's a learning curve, but once you're past it, it's pretty cool.

  22. nonie maylle I hear you loud and clear. But, I believe that all of the smaller platforms are plagued with nuthead users who were run off of the mainstream platforms. I wish I knew of a better solution. I went with MeWe because I think the mechanisms are there to build our own little world. I dunno.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I know you already said you were checking it out an hour ago, but I just want to throw my support to MeWe too. It's the most similar to Google+ I've found, and even has some nice bonus features (emoji reactions, chats in groups, events that can repeat themselves...).

The main things I don't like are going to be addressed by the end of the year (if their timetables aren't off): namely, the fact that everything's private until you ask to be added to someone's contacts, the reshare feature not crediting the OP, and no permalink.

Another thing I love is the fact that they actually give us updates. They just had a live Q&A less than 12 hours ago, which focused on G+ people's concerns.

Like others have said, there are nutjobs in MeWe too, but I haven't had to deal with a single one (since I'm only following G+ Migrants). And if enough G+ers move over there, they'd overcome the Right Wing nutjobs in terms of numbers anyway (not that I'm claiming that'll happen for sure; it all depends on how many people move and stay).

  24. Elisebeth Ross Hah. I just said the exact same thing in another thread.

  25. MeWe isn't necessarily a "better neighborhood," though.

  26. I am on Pluspora. It's a very small community, but you can communicate with others from Diaspora.
Quality of posts and people is similar to what we have here, without the spammers.
And yes, there is no collections and no communities. It's like Google+ in 2011. But you can use hashtags

    ReplyDelete
  27. I haven't found the better choice, myself. I'm not concerned that there are some whackadoodles, I'm steering clear of those and just doing my thing. Rather starting to dig the whole Tokens concept, probably will earn enough to up to the ad-free Plus account soon.

  28. Olivier Malinur pluspora is really nice indeed

    ReplyDelete
  29. Olivier Malinur well, without community and groups, it is just a mix of blogs basically.

    ReplyDelete
  30. You defined a social network. A mix of blogs.
Some will want to organize it as a gathering of ghettos, other like a souk with items grouped together. Original Google+ was organized with circles. And Sola is geographical proximity and topics of interest.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I find MeWe to be a Conservative party haven. That could change by making groups that pander to the Democrats viewpoint. But don't forget that we have 10 months till the end. Before then, we should be able to find hopefully a suitable place for us.

  32. Have you tried Tumblr? I haven't tried it yet but this is the description I found on the web and at the Tumblr site: Tumblr is an excellent Google+ alternative that lets you share and share anything and everything. Extremely flexible, widely enjoyable, ultra-sublime, it lets you post photos, texts, links, quotes, videos, music and the like from your email, PC, browser, phone and others more.

Tumblr made it really, really simple for people to make a blog and put whatever they want on it. Stories, photos, GIFs, TV shows, links, quips, dumb jokes, smart jokes, Spotify tracks, mp3s, videos, fashion, art, deep stuff. Tumblr is 441 million different blogs, filled with literally whatever.

All those great, random blogs your friends send you, those are Tumblr blogs. We’ll help you find and follow blogs like that, and we’ll help other people find and follow yours.

Once you follow a blog, all of its posts show up in your dashboard, just like you’d expect. See something great? Reblog it to your own blog. Add commentary if you like. Make it your own. Other people will do the same to your posts. That’s how you meet people on Tumblr.

A micro-blogging site like few others, its all fun, and lots more fun. With Tumblr, you’ll more or less be doing cartwheels every day due to how fab it makes you feel! tumblr.com - Sign up | Tumblr - Sign up | Tumblr

  33. Farhad Abdolian Friendica nodes, part of the federated social web with diaspora pods, has advanced user types you can use for communities, groups instead of circles, and other special user types instead of collections - depending on the collection type. It also allows you to connect, follow, interact with users of diaspora, mastadon, hubzilla, gnusocial because it is federated.

Hosting and administration is decentralized and there is no single authority that could ever shut it down. You have the option to host your own locally or remotely. You also have the option to join an existing node etc. Privacy and data controls in Friendica exceed g+ and you can edit posts (something that is broken in diaspora at the moment). Bonuses include ability to modify the UI and content layout to your preference.

Mastadon is more like Twitter, hubzilla reminds me of usenet in a way, diaspora is similar to G+ as Friendica is. Then there is movim whch claims to be capable of federating with others but is actually built on xmpp jabber services. I am still investigating all optiions but without a doubt moving to the federated social web. No matter the federated network type you choose, we can all still interconnect. One reason I chose Friendica is because it has a built in event calendar while the others did not. I found hubzilla later has one but it does not have a lot of things I like in Friendica. We all have different use cases!

  34. I can't reiterate enough using the word refugees is in very poor taste. There are people fighting to live who are refugees. Perhaps consider ourselves castaways instead.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Shelenn Ayres I think you're both overthinking and underthinking it. The term refugee has a long history of being used to describe non-tempest-toss't folks, including metaphorical refugees. No need to invent an uber narrow meaning that has never been its only sense.

  36. Eduardo Feliciano When the owner/admins are alt right, users are impacted in that direction since the way they manage the service is impacted by their world view. So it makes sense the right and alt-right are attracted to that service much like Gab using Pepe as their logo attracts them. No amount of moderate or left or far-left users will change a company run by the alt-right.

  37. Bring you "neighborhood" with you =)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Shelenn Ayres Then we both disagree. At least we're being agreeable about it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Kathie Gifford I was using tumblr right before G+ came out. I think some of my last tumblr posts were reviews of G+... maybe I should go back and see how it has changed.

  40. Friendica has groups (forums), a UI a bit like Facebook, and isn't too full of tinfoil-hatters, Bitcoin scammers and Nazis. (I was on Minds when it started out, but bailed a while back.)

Friendica, Hubzilla and Diaspora all interfederate, so you can pick whichever you like and users on the other systems can still follow you.
