I've got a crazy idea.

I've got a crazy idea. If we create our own site, maybe we can get Vic Gundotra to help since Google Plus is his baby and pride, and maybe he'll help with making the successor even better.

Comments

  1. Let's make Classic Google+ great again with another name! Would be fantastic with all its features!😎🍻🍻

  2. Dream on, but don't count on it. (1) Gundotra is very likely covered by a non-competitive clause as part of his separation from Google. (2) George Pendarbes Are you ready to do the coding to replicate G+? Because Google apparently isn't.

  3. I'm presently in the process of creating a social network for atheists (I won't have any objections to religious groups setting up communities too, but our intention is to support freedom of expression and ensure safety from discriminatory banishments for "being an atheist" which seems to be a problem that comes up on some other social networks from time-to-time).

The web site is not ready yet, but the address is: https://www.atheistcosmos.com/

If you are interested in early access, you can send an eMail to: info@atheistcosmos.com

One of the great things about the internet is that there are so many choices for people. My intention is for this to be one more choice that people will find useful.

  27. Vic G is the very last person I want to see in charge of G++ . Nice enough guy, completely incompetent as an executive. We really have Vic G to blame for what became of G+. Google wanted to have a social map, as it had a search map. Because Vic failed to listen to anyone, flirted (hard) with every good looking female in eyeshot and surrounded himself with sycophants, we're now discussing G++.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think it was Vic's decision to force real name policy and shoved G+ down the throats of people who didn't want it. He's smart but I think he isn't cut out to lead a social media project.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Dan Weese Holy cow! That's some crazy history right there. I had no idea about any of this, and I didn't even know that the name "Vic" was associated with Google+ behind-the-scenes.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Halfey Halphstein those 2 decisions were what I liked about Google+. Things went downhill AFTER Vic left but that seems to now be due to the fact the money bonus was gone for all of the Google teams to add integration and the mass breakup began, which I feel is still a mistake and Google as still dealing with siloed disfunctional apps today. Not that the apps are bad, they're still better than everything else, but the power of integration was great when it was there.

  31. Lol, I'm in no way involved with MeWe apart from trying out the app from Wednesday last week. No, no ads.

  32. I go back in social to before the goddamn Internet. I go back to BBSes and FidoNet. Running a social network is tougher than anyone supposes, but it's also surprisingly straightforward: all the executives need is for the power users to start caring about the people with less power than themselves. It really is that simple. It's about kindness and reciprocity, the glue which holds every societal unit together. But mostly it's about power, folks.

Who are you, gentle reader? I only have a few hundred followers. I routinely prune my followers list and I block even the slightest hint of assholery. I will find a home wherever I go, I'll probably take up residence in Pluspora, but there's no guarantee of that. I've been through this more than a few times.

It's about power. The power for good. But it's not really about good, it's about not-evil. Like Google originally believed, until Adwords turned into a fucking cash printing machine and the South Bay corrupted their tiny little minds.

Google has jumped the shark. They're about to turn into another AOL. Watch and see. Google is no longer cool.

But someone out there, someone who understands people like you, is thinking carefully about how the politics of the lunchroom have isolated and saddened generations of children, how frats and sororities have created little in-crowds who reinforce each other, how the uncoordinated and gawky kids , the ugly ducklings, grow up to become people such as you. People worth knowing.

Shakespeare understood you, all those centuries ago

What is your substance, whereof are you made,
That millions of strange shadows on you tend?
Since every one hath, every one, one shade,
And you but one, can every shadow lend.
    Describe Adonis, and the counterfeit
    Is poorly imitated after you;
On Helen's cheek all art of beauty set,
And you in Grecian tires are painted new:
Speak of the spring, and foison of the year,
The one doth shadow of your beauty show,
    The other as your bounty doth appear;
And you in every blessed shape we know.
In all external grace you have some part,
But you like none, none you, for constant heart.

My mistake. I misread a MeWe ad under a separate post in this stream. Apologies.

    Thanks, about the ads.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Dan Weese I remember the BBS days too. I didn't delve into FidoNet because I needed a break from running some BBSes (nothing major, and that's not a reference to MajorBBS either {which is good software}, heh).

The way you wrote and all that you included (Shakespeare, I suspect) reminds me of discussions on BBS message bases, so I know you're not kidding when you say that BBSes are in your background.

I agree with you about running a social network, and that it's politics behind-the-scenes that can ruin things. It's happened to many companies, sometimes spectacularly so (and it's usually the loyal employees and patient creditors who get hurt the most from it).

    ReplyDelete
  35. Randolf Richardson Yeah, there are ways to run social, which can make things a hell or a heaven. If I were running a social site, first aspect-of-power would be a user number. Early users form the framework of what the site could become.

All leadership is by example. There is no other kind. One of the reasons IRC continues to be a powerhouse, though nobody wants to admit its immense power and influence, is because its power user base exercises absolute power over the channels.

Too many executives, as we see happening to G+ - the whole thing collapses like an old mushroom on a horse turd. Google is truly a witless wonder. They're killing G+, as they killed Orkut, for no good reason - but for plenty of little stupid reasons. They're all too stupid to find their own asses in the dark.

    ReplyDelete
  36. stefan holzhauer quite an eye opener

    ReplyDelete
  37. Dan Weese Google wanted to have a social map, as it had a search map.

Interesting. Can it be one reason for closing G+ that they didn't get the benefit from it as planned?

I have often heard the saying: "If you want to stay connected - go to FB. If you want to meet new people - go to G+."
    LOL

As for my part, this was true (well, still is true). I don't have a FB account. But here, I have met so many wonderful and interesting people. This tool actually did not map my social graph, but it helped create it ( at least the online part).

    ReplyDelete
  38. Dan Weese I hope I can follow you where ever you land, your commentary is so insightful; maybe you just say what I see with more authority. I see Google going the way of AOL, then Yahoo as well. I have a few thousand followers but probably just the ~100 actives ones that seems to be the social limit.

I didn't do social before Twitter because I felt I had to create a 1 dimensional avatar and fit in. Now I know it's just a matter of staying not popular (thus not target worthy)😉

    ReplyDelete
  39. Christa Runge I've found Facebook to be completely useless since they disabled my account based on false accusations, which I learned about from their "appeals" process staff after over half a year of waiting. When I responded to the accusations they wrote back in less than 30 seconds that they won't be re-enabling my account for any reason at all.

So, I don't consider Facebook to be at all useful for staying connected with people.

    ReplyDelete

There were also some strange people I didn't know who liked to post inappropriate material on my timeline (and they did this to others too), but then Facebook introduced a feature to require confirmation from me for all third-party posters which solved the problem.

Unfortunately I'm not on Facebook anymore because they disabled by account based on false accusations (I suspect some anti-vaxxers may have ganged up on me because a science article I posted on my timeline about how vaccines work caught their attention and it was shortly after that when my account was disabled). I tried using Facebook's "appeals" process, but it failed miserably as they responded by basically telling me to "go fly a kite."

So, I don't use Facebook now. Getting my account set up and connecting with the 2,000+ people I know took months, and I'm not interested in putting my time into that all over again just to have my account disabled again.

There are a lot of networks available for people to choose from now, and they all offer different things along with many of the same features. I hope that the one I'm working on will someday become one of the recognizable and well-known types of social networks that takes freedom of expression seriously.
