I hope this (Google+ shutting down) causes enough people to understand that we need a platform which is both open source and decentralized to be reliable...

  1. Matrix/Riot and Mastodon both are open source and are at least federated, but are AFAIK not fully decentralized yet. Any ideas?

  2. Oh yes, and I forgot to add the requirement that algorithmic timelines and filters are a no-go unless every user is free to modify the algorithm used.

  3. Those are desirable properties, but it's also true that it takes a lot of coding and experiments to make a decent social media platform, plus work to keep it secure and running.

  4. G Kochanski Agreed. And with all the media content (and not just text) being shared, memory requirements would likely be another issue. I haven't thought this through in terms of scalability, but I still think that the stated requirements are fundamental.
