I hope this (Google+ shutting down) causes enough people to understand that we need a platform which is both open source and decentralized to be reliable...
Matrix/Riot and Mastodon both are open source and are at least federated, but are AFAIK not fully decentralized yet. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteOh yes, and I forgot to add the requirement that algorithmic timelines and filters are a no-go unless every user is free to modify the algorithm used.
ReplyDeleteThose are desirable properties, but it's also true that it takes a lot of coding and experiments to make a decent social media platform, plus work to keep it secure and running.
ReplyDeleteG Kochanski Agreed. And with all the media content (and not just text) being shared, memory requirements would likely be another issue. I haven't thought this through in terms of scalability, but I still think that the stated requirements are fundamental.
