Martha Magenta nothing (for consumers) is the current plan.
I'm just pointing out that there is an option in between how Google+ for consumers was before the sunsetting was announced and the "nothing" it will be for consumers after August next year when it shuts down.
Robert Wallis there is no point in staying for nothing. My reasons for being on G+ require sharing with like minds, so I would not stay, for nothing. It seems an absurd question to ask.
"...if there was a hypothetical option to pay a small subscription to use an improved paid version of Google+ would you do so?"
That depends a lot on the limitations of that paid version. Let's say for the sake of argument, that it would retain all content that was actively migrated by the respective users on a personal level, and they would keep all their content, and be able to post new content - with the current visibility settings - that would a great thing, and I would subscribe.
But then there is this: If you must pay to get R/O access to the above content- no, that would not work. I made my posts public, so that they could be seen. (For reference, MeWe will require a registration to see event the coming public posts, but at least it is free).
If you must pay to get commenting rights, but not post your own content, it would have to be really affordable. It might help on the spam problem if I could limit comments to paying and verified users (assuming verification could be made an accessible thing).
The real question is - if it is even feasible, because the current development and maintenance of access control as deemed "hard"? Would it work as a business model for Google?
Robert Wallis If it was something like $5 per year for non-profit accounts, I would stay, but i already agreed that on another post here and someone dissed my reply saying it was unrealistic as there aren't enough users to make it viable etc
Google no longer exists. Do not be evil no longer exists. It has been taken over by a venture capitol firm called Alpabet whose motto like all venture capitol firms is milk them until their dry
Bruce Haugland Google is a division of Alphabet. Google is going nowhere. G+ is a product of Google. Google has decided to sell to a paying customer base. We have been using their product for free.
Linda Tewes why are you trying to antagonise? apart from a tiny minority of anagonistic people like you, I have met wonderful people on G+ and enjoyed every minute, got lots out of it, met new friends, learned new skills. You only have to read the news to see how dishonest google has been to its users. Now end this convo please - go and irk someone else.
Linda Tewes You can't seem to help yourself. There is no evidence of that. It would be best if you kept your comments relevant to the post. Stop being antagonistic.
At first, I would have said yes. Today, after being on MeWe for several days, no. If Google rewrote and upgraded G+ to work as well as MeWe does, I'd return, only because of the integration with other Google offerings. Since that's not going to happen, no.
Yes, I would love for Google+ to stay. I like it, and I find the interface easy to understand and use, especially compared to most other social networks where features aren't so clear or straight-forward.
Phillip Landmeier So. Another strong personal vote for MeWe.
Well, these people have $10M and they are free speech.
But I hear two difficulties with the platform. First, NO support for Chinese and Hindi. [ Disastrous for me. Hope this changes 1Q 2019. ]
Second, apparently no collections! I need the collections! Collections are obvious. Otherwise I have to publish a guide so people can find my virtual collections.
Collections really qualify and characterize a person in several key respects. Collections themselves constitute a communications context and a public identity. Obviously I have a very clear public identity on G+.
How do you do that on MeWe? Do you simply publish items with tags and make people poke stuff? That is a workable mechanism in mechanical terms because I can make combo keys like WCANGEL_ANIMALS and so forth. But every post will need several keys and this puts the work on the reader.
What do people think about aggregating in MeWe?
Phillip Landmeier Re: "If Google rewrote and upgraded G+ to work as well as MeWe does. . . ."
No MeWe does NOT work as well! And maybe it never will. Again: language support and collections.
In a very key respect MeWe is very limited and crippled. It hurts my work very badly. At present it may be very small, compared with say 5M G+ users.
And in order to really grow and become a rich information ecosystem, you have to allow people to come on board.

Robert Wallis It does. On the other hand none of the social networks have unlimited free storage space. Somebody is always paying for the hard drives. Even with Google, I'm paying for extra space for photos and files.
Juha Lindfors that's an opt-in extra in GooglePhotos to keep the original files.
I agree that there always needs to be a workable business model which is why I think a discussion on a hypothetical subscription model for Google+ is one worth having.
Robert Wallis I think its a limit on my storage space in general (gmail + photos + drive) so it's the same deal: pay for a bigger limit or start deleting my files. So I'm already a subscriber and pay Google annually (used to be monthly). But clearly it doesn't pay for my G+ account.
Juha Lindfors I don't want to wander off topic, but the GooglePhotos (high res option) is unlimited. I use that and operate within my free threshold for Drive.
So I do not pay.
I do pay a GooglePlay Music subscription instead of Spotify. If there was a subscription offer for consumers to continue using GooglePlus then, unless it was extortionate, I would pay to continue using an improved, spam free and guaranteed service.
Robert Wallis Well I don't know how all the google's pricing, packages and plans work but I know this:
I pay for extra storage on Google Drive. When I go to my drive to see how much space I am using and how much space I have left, and when I click on the details, it lists the amount of space I use for Google Photos as counting towards my total space quota.
Right now of all the storage I use on Google, about 30% is from Google Photos. 5% is my Gmail, and 65% is my Google Drive files.
They may have different plans and different offerings depending when and how you joined (I just lost 100Gb of "free" space that came with my Android phone because it was "free" only for the first year, which I didn't realize so had to pay to upgrade to keep using my files).
Anyway, I certainly feel like I'm paying for my photo storage since that 35% of photo file space is part of my Google Drive quota.
Robert Wallis Right, maybe that's it. I find all of the product options and pricing highly confusing. And I wouldn't want my photos to be compressed and I am not complaining about having to pay for it :-)
But despite paying Google an annual subscription, I still can't have my G+ account. Not that it would matter since everyone is leaving anyway.
Robert Wallis And that's because Google doesn't want the product. It wouldn't make a difference to them if people paid, it won't be large enough of a profit to move the needle for their investors.
Instead partnering with the authoritarian regime in China will, they hope, increase their profit significantly :-/
So no matter what, option to pay or not, G+ would have disappeared. They were just looking for excuses. The people never mattered to Google. That's how I feel about it.
Robert Wallis Yeah well I guess that either translates to a business management problem, or a brand management problem. Google is quite known for how poorly they communicate to the outside world. And at some point it's bound to catch up and affect them negatively.
Google, PRC China And Totalitarian Search Engines The Real Story On Plans And Technology For Internet Blacklisting In Mainland China, While Refusing To Support Cloud Computing For The U.S. Government
[ Fair Use asserted. For educational purposes only. All legal rights remain with copyright owner. ]
“We have to be focused on what we want to enable,” said Ben Gomes, Google’s search engine chief. “And then when the opening happens, we are ready for it.”
It was Wednesday, July 18, and Gomes was addressing a team of Google employees who were working on a secretive project to develop a censored search engine for China, which would blacklist phrases like “human rights,” “student protest,” and “Nobel Prize.”
“You have taken on something extremely important to the company,” Gomes declared, according to a transcript of his comments obtained by The Intercept. “I have to admit it has been a difficult journey. But I do think a very important and worthwhile one. And I wish ourselves the best of luck in actually reaching our destination as soon as possible.”
Gomes joked about the unpredictability of President Donald Trump and groaned about the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China, which has slowed down Google’s negotiations with Communist Party officials in Beijing, whose approval Google requires to launch the censored search engine.
Gomes, who joined Google in 1999 and is one of the key engineers behind the company’s search engine, said he hoped the censored Chinese version of the platform could be launched within six and nine months, but it could be sooner. “This is a world none of us have ever lived in before,” he said. “So I feel like we shouldn’t put too much definite into the timeline.” theintercept.com - Leaked Transcript of Private Meeting Contradicts Google’s Official Story on China
wcangel I hear you. It's true that if one of your goals is to have a public presence, MeWe would certainly appear crippled and is probably not for you. Even when public posting is introduced in December, "public" means MeWe users, not the world. That's how it was explained to me.
So, today, there's no way for me to create a link to one of my posts on MeWe and paste it in here so you all can read it. I don't think there ever will be. It goes against the whole privacy architecture.
It's possible that I'm mistaken about what public posting will mean, but the above is my understanding.
All of this is fine with me. When I post on G+, I'm speaking to my followers, or the members of a group, or commenting to other plussers. It means nothing to me that it's visible to the world. I doubt whether any non-plussers have ever looked at any of my posts.
wcangel Yeah, it's a different way to build a social network. It works fine for me and has the obvious benefit that porn and spammers are screwed, so to speak. But if I were, let's say, a prominent journalist, and I want my writings to be shared and spread around the world, MeWe is a no go -- at least by itself.
Next year, I will be working on a project with my daughter where publicity is the goal, so your concerns are also in my mind. I plan to solve it by means of an ordinary web site and a blog, which are up and running, plus promotion on Pinterest, Etsy, and others.
And, were I a journalist, I might choose the blog plus MeWe approach.

How can you leave or not leave something that no longer exists?
ReplyDeleteMartha Magenta this is a hypothetical third option, between the G Suit and nothing options which Google could theoretically still offer.
ReplyDeleteProbably.
ReplyDeleteIt would be,in reality,very benefitial
ReplyDeleteRobert Wallis how do you envisage 'nothing options'? what would that be?
ReplyDeleteInteresting though.
ReplyDeleteMartha Magenta The “Nothing” option is what they’re giving us now. No G+ after August 2019.
ReplyDeleteOne will continue to be able to post publicly.
ReplyDeleteMartha Magenta nothing (for consumers) is the current plan.
ReplyDeleteI'm just pointing out that there is an option in between how Google+ for consumers was before the sunsetting was announced and the "nothing" it will be for consumers after August next year when it shuts down.
Julian Dumitrascu publicly to whom?
ReplyDeleteIf there are no consumer users there will be no point in public posting for G Suit users.
Robert Wallis there is no point in staying for nothing. My reasons for being on G+ require sharing with like minds, so I would not stay, for nothing. It seems an absurd question to ask.
ReplyDeleteMartha Magenta I think we have crossed wires.
ReplyDeleteThere will be no option to stay (for consumers) after August next year, as Google+ will not exist.
But, if there was a hypothetical option to pay a small subscription to use an improved paid version of Google+ would you do so?
"...if there was a hypothetical option to pay a small subscription to use an improved paid version of Google+ would you do so?"
ReplyDeleteThat depends a lot on the limitations of that paid version. Let's say for the sake of argument, that it would retain all content that was actively migrated by the respective users on a personal level, and they would keep all their content, and be able to post new content - with the current visibility settings - that would a great thing, and I would subscribe.
But then there is this:
If you must pay to get R/O access to the above content- no, that would not work.
ReplyDeleteGoogle no longer exists. Do not be evil no longer exists. It has been taken over by a venture capitol firm called Alpabet whose motto like all venture capitol firms is milk them until their dry
ReplyDeleteNo. When the trust is gone, it's gone. It's time to move on.
ReplyDeleteI'd pay for it, but as noted above, it's not going to happen.
ReplyDeleteRobert Wallis exactly. You will be posting to others in your company. At least that is how I read it.
ReplyDeleteBruce Haugland Google is a division of Alphabet. Google is going nowhere. G+ is a product of Google. Google has decided to sell to a paying customer base. We have been using their product for free.
ReplyDeleteLinda Tewes we have been their willing guinea pigs testing it for them
ReplyDeleteMartha Magenta In other words, you think google owes you.
ReplyDeleteLinda Tewes no, but it has been dishonest
ReplyDeleteMartha Magenta Most of life’s disappointments have their roots in mistaken expectations.
ReplyDeleteDid Google ever promise to meet your expectations?
Did they promise to be here forever or did you assume they would be?
Linda Tewes why are you trying to antagonise? apart from a tiny minority of anagonistic people like you, I have met wonderful people on G+ and enjoyed every minute, got lots out of it, met new friends, learned new skills. You only have to read the news to see how dishonest google has been to its users. Now end this convo please - go and irk someone else.
ReplyDeleteMartha Magenta Me?
ReplyDeleteI don’t have to be antagonistic.
You’re the one interpreting every comment as a personal attack.
Linda Tewes You can't seem to help yourself. There is no evidence of that. It would be best if you kept your comments relevant to the post. Stop being antagonistic.

ReplyDeleteC'mon people. Can't we all just get along? ☺ Just accept that others will have different beliefs and opinions.
ReplyDeleteJust good ol' heathy discussion.
ReplyDeleteEven just keeping G+ alive thru 2020 would have made a huge ( x3 ) difference.
ReplyDeleteAt first, I would have said yes. Today, after being on MeWe for several days, no. If Google rewrote and upgraded G+ to work as well as MeWe does, I'd return, only because of the integration with other Google offerings. Since that's not going to happen, no.
ReplyDeleteYes, I would love for Google+ to stay. I like it, and I find the interface easy to understand and use, especially compared to most other social networks where features aren't so clear or straight-forward.
ReplyDeletePhillip Landmeier the integration is a large part of why I would stay here if possible.
ReplyDeleteA social network on it's own, even a good one, isn't as broadly useful as one where the same identity is used across a host of other services.

That is a workable mechanism in mechanical terms because I can make combo keys like
WCANGEL_ANIMALS
and so forth.
But every post will need several keys and this puts the work on the reader.
What do people think about aggregating in MeWe?

Re: "If Google rewrote and upgraded G+ to work as well as MeWe does. . .

Re: "If Google rewrote and upgraded G+ to work as well as MeWe does. . .

That is a workable mechanism in mechanical terms because I can make combo keys like
WCANGEL_ANIMALS
and so forth.
But every post will need several keys and this puts the work on the reader.

wcangel don't forget that MeWe is a freemium model.
ReplyDeleteWhen you run out of free storage you will need to pay.
Robert Wallis Or delete your old content to make more free space.
ReplyDeleteJuha Lindfors yes, living within a fixed limit is an option, though that would require a fair bit of housework.
ReplyDeleteRobert Wallis It does. On the other hand none of the social networks have unlimited free storage space. Somebody is always paying for the hard drives. Even with Google, I'm paying for extra space for photos and files.
ReplyDeleteJuha Lindfors that's an opt-in extra in GooglePhotos to keep the original files.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there always needs to be a workable business model which is why I think a discussion on a hypothetical subscription model for Google+ is one worth having.
Robert Wallis I think its a limit on my storage space in general (gmail + photos + drive) so it's the same deal: pay for a bigger limit or start deleting my files. So I'm already a subscriber and pay Google annually (used to be monthly). But clearly it doesn't pay for my G+ account.
ReplyDeleteJuha Lindfors My company doesn't limit the amount of data people can manage with our software. We try to keep the storage cost down.
ReplyDeleteJuha Lindfors I don't want to wander off topic, but the GooglePhotos (high res option) is unlimited. I use that and operate within my free threshold for Drive.
ReplyDeleteSo I do not pay.
ReplyDeleteI pay for extra storage on Google Drive.
Juha Lindfors you will be using the "Original" option for GooglePhotos. I am not.
ReplyDeletehttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/RhME5wUCOT_S3ccn5kSMWdkszeMrPRMcYH1XI2rNIR9K6rxEsn4WlmUh5n4tHrGIodcLyZcCr9WGXKo=s0
Robert Wallis Right, maybe that's it. I find all of the product options and pricing highly confusing. And I wouldn't want my photos to be compressed and I am not complaining about having to pay for it :-)
ReplyDeleteBut despite paying Google an annual subscription, I still can't have my G+ account. Not that it would matter since everyone is leaving anyway.
Juha Lindfors yes. Though everyone is leaving partly because there is no option to pay and stay.
ReplyDeleteRobert Wallis And that's because Google doesn't want the product. It wouldn't make a difference to them if people paid, it won't be large enough of a profit to move the needle for their investors.
ReplyDeleteInstead partnering with the authoritarian regime in China will, they hope, increase their profit significantly :-/
So no matter what, option to pay or not, G+ would have disappeared. They were just looking for excuses. The people never mattered to Google. That's how I feel about it.
Juha Lindfors that's the way many people feel an that's sad.
ReplyDeleteI know a lot of people, both inside and outside of Google and they were all very dedicated to GooglePlus as a product.
To me it feels like a high level decision, taken with little overview of what the product is or what kind of future it could have had.
Robert Wallis Yeah well I guess that either translates to a business management problem, or a brand management problem. Google is quite known for how poorly they communicate to the outside world. And at some point it's bound to catch up and affect them negatively.

ReplyDeleteThe Real Story On Plans And Technology For Internet Blacklisting In Mainland China, While Refusing To Support Cloud Computing For The U.S. Government
Leaked Transcript of Private Meeting Contradicts Google’s Official Story on China

“So I feel like we shouldn’t put too much definite into the timeline.”

ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time similar words were spoken of G+... hope they meet the same fate.
wcangel I hear you. It's true that if one of your goals is to have a public presence, MeWe would certainly appear crippled and is probably not for you. Even when public posting is introduced in December, "public" means MeWe users, not the world. That's how it was explained to me.
ReplyDeleteSo, today, there's no way for me to create a link to one of my posts on MeWe and paste it in here so you all can read it.

Discoverability is very important to me.
I have to check whether I can get that on Reddit and other candidate platforms.
I can still cut and paste between platforms.
I understand that MeWe prioritizes privacy in this way.
I will probably set up on MeWe anyway.

wcangel Yeah, it's a different way to build a social network. It works fine for me and has the obvious benefit that porn and spammers are screwed, so to speak. But if I were, let's say, a prominent journalist, and I want my writings to be shared and spread around the world, MeWe is a no go -- at least by itself.
ReplyDeleteNext year, I will be working on a project with my daughter where publicity is the goal, so your concerns are also in my mind. I plan to solve it by means of an ordinary web site and a blog, which are up and running, plus promotion on Pinterest, Etsy, and others.
And, were I a journalist, I might choose the blog plus MeWe approach.
