Improving MeWe

Improving MeWe

Here are some suggestions I submitted to the MeWe team. Hopefully they will work on some issues.

• Fix the problems with formatting of posts; sometimes there are some “*” characters although they haven’t bee entered
• Fix the problems with disastrous looking formatted posts on Android devices
• Reduce the number of emojis; they don’t have standardized meanings and it’s not that good if they leave room for interpretation; just limit them to + and -
• Editing a comment on Android and iOS smartphones is a disaster; there’s nearly no space to see what’s entered and scrolling through the text is a very special challenge
• Placement of controls isn’t optimized; it should always be possible to see the “status” of notifications; the controls “Me, We, Photos, Camera, GIF, ...” are much too close to the text field (use a drop down menu)
• A more frequent use of drop-down menus would be nice; some controls in the iOS UI are light grey and look like they were disabled
•  Replies to comments shouldn’t be hidden by default
• There is no option to generate a link to a whole post (Copy Link just copies the link which the post refers to)
• I miss categories and collections like we have on G+
• MeWe can’t be used with a browser on a mobile device. The site looks horrible and is incomplete regardless wether you use Safari or Chrome on an iOS or Android device

A general suggestion
Wouldn’t it be a great idea to start official talks with Google to let them create a migration tool “Google+ to MeWe”?

Thanks for reading.

  1. We really need to have categories in communities.

  2. MeWe really needs Chinese and Hindi.
Without those it can never claim to be a world class platform.

Android is simply not central to social networking, despite what some may say.

I can do social networking on Loire Valley France on an Apple iPad.
I do tons of online work and I have never touched an Android in my entire life.

However, many tens of millions of people use Hindi DAILY and many tens of millions more use Chinese DAILY.
    And other Asian languages.

It's all about getting to square one.

  9. Shawn H Corey Maybe but they’re not used in this way. I smiling face for example can express a funny feeling or it can be meant ironically. Again, we have words (but some people don’t have). If I see more than 3 emojis in a comment within the 900k community I’m a moderator in the comment will be deleted. 10 or more will be followed by a ban.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thomas Unterstenhoefer Gee, there's 12 of them in the preview image create by G+. Does that mean I get banned? Or are you going to ban G+?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Shawn H Corey It always depends on the context. Sometimes members just want to distract a normal discussion with lots of emojis. That’s called trolling and is always followed by a ban from the community.

Btw, “or are you going to ban G+” is a quite useless question.

Now let’s stop the discussion about emojis.
It’s not what I intended to post. Thank you.

It remains the fact that only a few people use more than 5-10 emojis. Sadly they use it most often in a way which lets much room for interpretation. There’s no place for them in a fruitful discussion based on facts. That’s why we don’t allow an extensive usage.

  12. Actually I like the freedom to choose any emoji and the way MeWe counts them. But I get it that quite a few people have said the opposite.

  13. A world class platform will support Chinese, Japanese, Hindi and Russian.
A TRULY world class platform will support Arabic and Urdu.

Support for Chinese, Japanese, and Hindi is crucial and highest priority.
The purpose of social media platforms is to support communication, not to prevent it.

I can do some emojis using an ASCII keyboard. No need for emoji glyphs.
Great need for Chinese, Japanese, and Hindi.

    Make sense?

  18. wcangel Agree to your opinion about languages and the many people speaking them. MeWe, like many other networks, first started in the USA and focused on US citizens. That’s what all companies do in a first step. So you have to give them some time to expand their features and regions of activity.

It’s hard to keep a network clean if you don’t have enough employees who are able to read, write, and speak other languages. Using words and understanding the real meaning is a complicated job. You won’t get useful help from automated translations of other languages into English because they are most often distorting the meaning. Freedom of speech is a high value but keeping trolls, sickos, and extremists out is also what should be part of a network’s policy. This needs lots of native speakers of lots of languages.

    MeWe isn’t Google.
    They don’t care about millions.

MeWe’s capabilities are limited. Maybe they can welcome lots of G+ refugees in the near future. I’m sure that they aware of the language problem but their options are still limited. Even if they would have an investor it’s not possible to just buy the people which skills are needed to expand.

“The purpose of social media platforms is to support communication, not to prevent it.”

You talked about the two largest countries by population, China and India. I don’t see that they built up a worldwide accepted social network we all talk about and would like to join. So I think it’s not fair to criticize MeWe. Others don’t even have an exciting network.

  19. I wish people would not write long essays in comments. Most people do not have time to keep up. If you have a valid comment, be succinct and say it in a few breaths length. Otherwise, you may as well put it on your blog.

  20. Not having a functional Android app is a non-starter. I deleted my Mewe acct after installing the Android app and seeing what a dumpster fire it was.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thom Thomas I installed the MeWe app on my Nokia 6.1 running Android Oreo 8.1 and I can’t agree with you. It works stable like the iOS app on my iPhone running iOS 12.

  22. I thought the UI and UX was painful to look at. And limited functionality bugged me.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thom Thomas The UI can be improved. That’s what I can agree with but it isn’t that bad. Much better than the UI of FB :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thomas Unterstenhoefer I wouldn't know, I haven't used FB for nearly a decade. 😎

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thom Thomas A UI is always a subjective thing. Mentioning the Play Store rating should just show you (and others here) that users think differently about the app for Android than you.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thomas Unterstenhoefer doesn't matter to me. Millions of people use FB. I don't care what they think. If I don't like something, I'm not going to use it. I've been enjoying diaspora. It has its problems too, but so far I haven't want to throw up when I open the app or go to the website.

    Can't say that for MeWe.

  27. Thom Thomas OK. Great that you found a new place up to your preferences. Thanks for your comments.
