Public Service Announcement : If you are leaving G+ for good, please make your very last post a list of places where we can find you (Pluspora, Twitter, etc).

That way, those of us who are trying to maintain communication with our old G+ friends will will know where to find/follow/aspect you.

Comments

  1. I'm planning to stay to the bitter end (and maybe turn out the lights when I leave) but I have already started setting up alternative venues. Been beefing up my Twitter settings and I'm deep in the learning curve in Pluspora.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Lee Grupsmith-Pedersen with me I'm considering mewe, but I'm with you I'm not jumping ship until the cancellation is truly confirmed.

I have even been issueing some feedback on their products site.

    ReplyDelete
  3. My recommendation is to create that post now and pin it so that it stays at the top of the list for those who visit your profile/collection.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Riley Chance Tell me about Mewe. I've seen it mentioned but have not looked at it yet. I set up Pluspora because I have a long-dormant Diaspora account (well, not anymore).

    ReplyDelete
  5. Lee Grupsmith-Pedersen I'll update you as I learn more

    ReplyDelete
  6. Already made a pinned post - staying to the bitter end tho

    ReplyDelete
  7. Don`t talk the users into leaving the network earlier as necessary!
Now is the time to look for a new planet but also to stay and fight.

And the most important message should be now:
    Don`t kill your Google+-Profile

    ReplyDelete
  8. It's conceivably possible, but probably unlikely, that Google will keep G+ online in read-only mode for some time after the shutdown, like they did with Google Code.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I've got a pinned post with that info - i'll be around for a while though.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yeah, instead of "your last" post, make it a post pinned to (the head of) your profile.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Or pin it but yeah

I'll be staying here till the end most likely, but I have a number of places...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Will do. For the moment I'm settled in over on MeWe, but a lot can change in ten months. Nor have I left G+ yet.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Pin it, but maybe limit read access to your circles. Or else you leave a nice bait for data dealers / harvesters.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Jürgen Christoffel I have limited any contact information to my circles only.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Please note that the Contact Information / Meeting Sites section in this community is also for this purpose. If you are leaving, please let us know where to find you.

  16. We have 9 mths essentially to make decisions. I encourage people to test different options then make a decision together :) I think most of us will be or have joined the federated social web so this never happens again.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Shelenn Ayres Test! Try things! Report back! I agree with Shelenn!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Shelenn Ayres This is a mass migration, though one individuals are making on their own, with information from others.

There may be interim settlements or several camps.

I've a lot of thoughts on this, only some here:
    https://plus.google.com/104092656004159577193/posts/eetPRdL4VkP

(Yeah, I like to think and write too much.)

  19. Pin your *public** forwarding address(es) to your profile.

That's the easiest way for people to find them.

Your profile *About page also has space for this, though it's not as visible.

For limited visibility contacts: Create a "Friends" collection, limit it to specific Circles, and pin additional but non-public contacts there.

Post those to the specific Circles as well.

Keep in mind that shared references may also be harvested by others.

    Example post:
    https://plus.google.com/104092656004159577193/posts/MuoLbpNFZ4m

John Hattan: Consider updating your post w/ these suggestions?

  20. Thaaanks! Friend! Is this the Mitigations issue? BM

    ReplyDelete
  21. Stephan Beal Oh, that's smart. I wouldn't have thought of pinning the post offhand. When I figure out what I'm doing, I'll pin it!

    Contad conmigo.

    Desde Europa, saludos.

  23. John Lewis Language guidance? (See above.)

  24. Thank you for the kind invitation 😊 This was a fantastic idea! ✨👌

    ReplyDelete
  25. I've pinned my pluspora address to the top of my collection, and I have also joined mewe. I think over the next 10 months there will be a lot of xploring but I think most of us won't want to spread ourselves too thin.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'll be staying to the end. After that I'll be creating either a blog or website. When I finalize either one of these I will pin it to my profile.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Edward Morbius Speak any language you like. We have google translate.

    ReplyDelete
  28. When G+ disappears, will your Google Profile disappear as well? Because the profile is common to other Google properties. And it used to be possible to add links to other social networks.

However. I'd strongly recommend having a personal domain with a personal website, that contains a roll of all your social media profile pages each with some semantic web markup in the form of rel='me' on each link. I call it a YASN-Roll. (Yet Another Social Network).

    ReplyDelete
  29. Julian Bond Unclear. I'm going to write a Dear Googles request for clarification & submit feedback.

    ReplyDelete
  30. John Lewis Thanks.

So does the poster though, a point to consider. But accepting policy.

    ReplyDelete
  31. John Lewis The Google-translater is working with English and German. French, Spanish an Italian to german is acceptable. Other translations are terrible sometimes.

When I translate the last sentence of the comment of Edward Morbius :
    But accepting policy.
    to german, I see:
    Aber akzeptieren Politik.
    "Politics" is "Politik" in German.

    It`s really funny sometimes.

But also disturbing. This is the main reason why I opened a community for nativ german speaker.

  32. Peter Kassau-Schmook Using Friendica with the browser on a laptop, i only right clicked and selected translate one time... it now auto translates the page anytime it is not english for me... I don't need G+ to do that - we can usually tell as you say with the context what the translation should be

    ReplyDelete
  33. Shelenn Ayres That`s right, but we are in the strange world of Google+ here ... 😃

You can add me on diaspora, I`m a #gplusrefugee on pluspora. 😊

    ReplyDelete
  34. Peter Kassau-Schmook I looked for @Peter Kassau-Schmook but did not find you... username different?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Shelenn Ayres Also ich finde mich in der Suchmaske, wenn ich "Peter K" eingegeben habe. 😊
    Gib da mal peterkassauschmook@pluspora.com ein.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Peter Kassau-Schmook Could you link that Community here or post to the "Other Gpocalypse Communities" section, even better?

I'm trying to keep vague track of those.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Edward Morbius Ok. I make a new post. There was another on Thursday. 😊
    Massenflucht vom Planeten Google+

    ReplyDelete
  38. Peter Kassau-Schmook it only works if you know the format to put in search to bring up the profile... specifically like this:

    @username@socialnetwork

Google will moderate it if I paste it so I will insert spaces after the @ signs

    @ peterkassauschmook@ pluspora.com

    ReplyDelete
  39. Peter Kassau-Schmook Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Peter Kassau-Schmook yes but I cannot search there not having an account there if that makes sense. I searched from Friendica in the global search :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Shelenn Ayres Oh, really? That`s bad , I didn`t know that only #Diasporix have this possibility. 😊

  43. To people who are posting here with there information, we should consider that there is an entire section dedicated to this called Contact Information / Meeting Sites.

That is the right place for "archiving" yourself at the moment, although we should consider creating a directory in Google Docs.

I may move this thread there, even though it was obviously intended as advice, it has become a thread where people are posting their destination.

    All the best,
    John

    ReplyDelete
  44. No problem on moving it. I'm also closing comments. I think we've covered this as deeply as it's gonna get covered.
