What's the state of the art for cellphone-based usenet readers?
With a few servers, we could set up newsgroups without connecting them to the rest of the planet, if my understanding of the structure is anywhere near correct.

you may use Google Groups, which mirror most meaningful USENET groups. There you can read/post to groups using a web browser.
ReplyDeleteDima Pasechnik No, I mean something outside of Google.
ReplyDeletejust john Adding new Usenet newgroups is adding more groups to Usenet. Google's view of it is like a cafe looking out at the ocean, that happens to serve nice tea (a Web user interface).
ReplyDeleteUsenet is very useful, but it fundamentally is based around open access to all posts - which is a significant function gap over most social networks, including G+.
Alan Peery Google Groups don't have the basic usenet functionality of killfiles.
ReplyDeletejust john OK, Google groups is a cafe with nice tea, missing the required rat catching traps on the doors. :-)
ReplyDeleteSeriously, thanks for the mentioning the lack of killfiles.
the usual USENET protocol (NNTP) problem is that ISPs tend to block it. So one is seriously out of luck with it in 2018...
ReplyDeleteGmane was a nice effort to provide NNTP access to Google Groups, but it's down and I doubt it will be back to normal as it used to be

just john although you can have moderation, invitation-only groups, and all that. When gmane was alive, it was possible to use killfiles on Google Groups via their NNTP interface and your local NNTP client...
ReplyDeleteAlso ... How long will Groups be supported, now that G+ is going away? G+ was on the first page of Google products. Groups, far more hidden.
ReplyDeletejust john Google groups is Google's bread, just like Gmail. Even more, it basically has a monopoly on hosting historical Usenet content...
ReplyDeleteDima Pasechnik A week ago one might have heard that exact thing about G+.
