Time to say goodbye
A long Google journey is coming to an end. It turned out easier than I had anticipated to replace Google products like Mail (Proton Mail), Search (Qwant and Duck Duck Go), Translate (DeepL), Hangout (Threema and Signal) and so on. But despite all my efforts I haven’t been able to find a replacement for Google+, it really was one of a kind. But maybe a break from social will do me good.
From the early pioneer days Google+ was about sincere engagement and unabridged discussion, both in public and in closed communities. I’ve encountered some fantastic people in here, some really great curators, many people I agree with, and of course some people I respectfully disagree with too. I’ve met curiosity and interest and open minds. A special tribute to those of you who consistently shared information that forced me to stop and rethink. I’ve learned a lot. Thanks, all you!
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack posts on fire shooting off the raging nym wars. I watched beams of light and hope glitter in the darkness of the internet. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to say good bye. Time for other things.
So long, and thanks for all the fish 👍
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I could have written that same post. Proton, Duck Duck, Signal, same here. Blogs removed from Blogspot to Wordpress on private server. Thousands of documents removed from Drive. I'm going.
ReplyDeleteHowever, where to find you?
Phillip Landmeier Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Diaspora(which I quite like), Fedilab, Pashpost, Spectrum. chat, Tribyo. com etc...
ReplyDelete#ShawnAndrew_ARTIST
Shawn Andrew Done.
ReplyDeletePhillip Landmeier Diaspora has some interesting people. It takes time to find them, like I found with Google plus, but they're on Diaspora.
ReplyDeleteShawn Andrew Yeah, I've connected with hundreds of plussers on MeWe and my network on Friendica is growing daily. I've found about 40, so far.
ReplyDeleteI've down loaded many apps to replace Google plus and most were shit. Couldn't log back in after logging out, took forever to download photos, would freeze etc...
ReplyDeleteEveryone is trying to cash in on the drop in popularity of Facebook.
But the quality isn't there.
Phillip Landmeier some of them are going to Diaspora as well.
ReplyDeletePhillip Landmeier once Google plus finally shuts down it will finally be real for people who have not yet made alternative plans and there'll be a flood of people into these apps.
ReplyDeleteIt was a pleasure Per Siden !
ReplyDeleteSee you soon on Openbook
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Per Siden , wishing you all the best.
ReplyDeleteBut why were you replacing everything else? AFAIK, only G+ is shutting down - although, apparently, Hangouts is also going to disappear soon.
ReplyDeleteDiana Studer Openbook is a commendable effort, I wish them every success and is happy to support them. They do however have quite a way to go, and may or may not make it. Jamez Frondeskias's youme.social is another hopeful newcomer that have my full respect.
ReplyDeleteSteve Vasta what is it they say, "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"? Google+ is not the first Google product I had come to depend upon that they cancelled, discontinued or pulled the support from. The list has become embarrassingly long to be honest. The lesson I've learned, finally, is that I cannot trust Google, and I cannot make myself dependent on their products. I won't let Google be my single point of failure.
ReplyDeleteSteve Vasta a number of products are being shipped to Google's graveyard.
ReplyDeletePer Siden thank you :)
