Does anyone know if we can salvage our collections? Will there be a backup for this and all the thousands of posts I have made since 2011? How about our friends' lists. Uploeaded photo collections? Most have over 1000 friends during the years. Please rep;y if you have definite information. Thanks
Hi Brenda Rebel Angel. I'm not sure if you count this as definite information, but Google has said that they definitely will provide a means to export our own content. That should include all of our posts and any photos that are in Google+ itself. Most photos, however, would be in Google Photos, which should not be affected by the shutdown of Google+. Google has not provided details about what kind of tool or tools they will provide to do that yet.
ReplyDeleteExporting friends doesn't make sense because all they could provide would be a list of Google+ profile names without breaching the privacy of users, and Google+ profile names will be approaching meaningless when Google+ is deprecated.
You can export your data via takeout (a good rundown is here: plus.google.com - Google is shutting down its much-maligned social network, Google+, after user... ) although be warned it's kind of messy.
ReplyDeleteI don't know that Google plans to make it at all more friendly or something more specific for G+ data but I wouldn't wait on that, I'd go ahead and save your data, and then you can always discard it if they provide a nicer method later (or heck, keep both).

ReplyDeleteGoogle's announcement was stated that they will provide means to export Google+ content so that it will be able to imported into other social networking products. They have not said whether that will be via an enhanced version of Takeout or a new offering, only that it will come in the future. We therefore have to wait to see what Google provides. The answer is not available today.
