Does anyone know if we keep our gmail? If that goes into a paying service, I'm gonna have to transfer all my bills and such, somewhere else. Gonna be mighty peeved if I have to.
If I get a question like this before G+ incident, I'd reply with total confidence that Google wouldn't do such a thing but I'm not sure what their next move could be right now. I hope they keep other products free to use as usual.
== Q: Are other Google services, such as Gmail, affected by this shutdown? ==
A: To the limited extent we understand Google Product offerings, the logic by which they are interrelated, and the frequency with which they are sent to their death in gladiatorial battle: '''NO.'''
In other news, I can recommend an excellent vintage of merlot.

Gmail is a separate product from Google+.
ReplyDeleteShort answer: Yes. Your Gmail is safe.
ReplyDeleteSallie Alys Montuori I hope so. Think somewhere I saw a package deals and gmail being in one of them. Then again maybe it was faked.
ReplyDeletea lot of small companies use gmail so for now it's probably fine.
ReplyDeleteAccording to John Skeats there are no known plans to end gmail, youtube, google docs or other products that are not part of G+
ReplyDeleteRose tyler I believe what you saw is GSuite package that offers GMail but allows businesses to use custom domain for it.
ReplyDeleteHalfey Halphstein okay. Thanks. This is so very confusing.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be surprised if Google will try to make us pay for it.
ReplyDeleteAnton A You already pay for it. It has ads.
ReplyDeleteJohn Lewis Agreed, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

ReplyDeleteGmail is not part of G+ so it is safe for now. So long as Android is competitive in the mobile phone market you will be safe.
ReplyDeleteKerem Gogus I'm afraid Google is getting arrogant and careless due to their number one position in the field of search engines.
ReplyDeleteGoogle scans gmail's emails. We are the product they sell. See e.g. --- sorry, a tabloid link :-(

Gmail isn't going anywhere.
ReplyDeleteNo way Google is getting rid of Gmail for very obvious reasons. Gmail is worth it to Google. Google+ ... not so much.
ReplyDeleteGoogle can read my Gmail account. That's the email I use for websites that spam.
ReplyDeleteMitcy Dupres That's a smart move. I personally made a backup gmail account for that single purpose. Now way I trust Google with my private email!
ReplyDeleteThis and related questions would make a great section for the #PlexodusWiki FAQ.

(It doesn't include much of what's above, but as noted, that would make great material to add.)

And addressing the question in this post:
