Early Writing On The Wall: Google France already shut down activity in August
Apparently before the sunset of GPlus was announced, Google France already shut down its presence on the network, and redirected followers to Facebook and even (former) competitor Facebook.

That's pretty old news. Project Loon did the same at the same period.
ReplyDeleteKerry Kook because they got hacked, and instead of fixing it, they want to shut it down.
ReplyDeleteKerry Kook Surprise surprise, and facebook got hacked too. twice.
ReplyDeleteWilliam Johnston well that's not true, it wasn't a big breach and they fixed the bug. I think they used it among other things as an excuse to shut it down.

theverge.com - The breach that killed Google+ wasn’t a breach at all
Christine Bichler Its not the size of the breach that matters. If it was so small, why are they shutting down? Why not fix the breach, restart the system, or update the system, OR have a backup system for people to use once it is shut down. Maybe I am a conspiracy theorist, but it seems odd to do all this work setting something up, and then shut it down over a small breach UNLESS something else was going on we don't know about.
ReplyDeleteWilliam Johnston have you ever taken a car in for servicing because of nasty sounding symptoms, discovered that the cause of that particular problem was not nearly as bad as it seemed, but the incident triggered you to reflect on how much you were spending on repairs for that vehicle and whether it was worth spending on the engine rebuild that was going to be needed coming up, or if instead it was time to give up on it, and get rid of it?
ReplyDeleteGoogle looked at the product and how it would have to be rebuilt to stand up to demands that were coming up, and decided that it wasn't worth the investment.
Or if you prefer: I priced out some home renovations including expanding the kitchen to deal with a less than ideal placement of appliances. The price for the renovation was more than the cost of buying a condominium. Do I invest knowing that the market value of the place would increase by only about 1/4 of what I spend ? Do I give up and move out and let a developer buy the existing place and tear it down and replace it with a duplex or triplex?
William Johnston I totally understand what you mean and I really wish they would not shut it down, actually we don't know exactly what was going on, maybe Google lost interest in doing social long time ago and the relaunch in 2015 was a last trial to make it more attractive for a wider audience, but probably this didn't work.

ReplyDeleteGoogle has a history of doing a lot of work creating something and then shutting it down... Reader, Buzz, Spaces, etc., etc., etc.
Of course... I said its a sign on the ending of G+ but nobody listened to me.
ReplyDeleteAndrew Hatchett oh well that's a good point...
