Getting Started With Hubzilla 3.+

I'm not sure if this has been shared before, but it explains the basics of Hubzilla 3.0.

Currently testing out an install of v3.8 on an AWS instance and hope to have a public testable platform for others to join soon here (https://hubzilla.gshift.cc). I'm also creating a set of procedures for AWS installs should anyone else want to give it a go themselves. Hope to have that all done in the next few days or so.

Having the ability to set up multiple channels from one account is one of the coolest features I've bumped into so far e.g. One channel can be public and federated, so connections across Fediverse/Federation platforms is pretty seamless - commenting, +1/liking and resharing Mastodon Toots and Pluspora posts from accounts I can follow on one central stream. Another channel can host a private community, or a brand promotional page. There is a channel manager that allows you to instantly switch between your channels.

Unlike Pluspora (as far as I can tell), posts and comments can be edited after posting, and are timestamped to the last save point (and marked as edited by an icon).

There are also many useful looking addons to explore including wikis, articles, chatrooms and events, and a customizable navigation bar to pin the most commonly used features to. No mobile app as yet unfortunately but the UI is responsive, providing a smooth mobile browser experience. There is work currently underway on an Android App however, albeit at an early stage.

    Shaun Arman How did you set up your tftsr channel? It has to be set to 'Social - Federation' to connect with others within the federation. The default setting is 'Social - Mostly Public' which will allow other Hubzilla users to find you (which I have) but not other Federated platform users. Create a new channel with the 'Social - Federation' Role and see if this helps

    Shaun Arman I completely forgot; there is a plugin for Diaspora Protocol. You have to install that as well from the 'Install more apps' link on the right hand side of your profile. Then click on the app itself to configure it. That might be the issue...

    My concern for all of these replacements are that as they get bigger they will have to face other issues like lack of financing and censorship. When you are small no one looks at you but say one service gets even 25% of G plus users it will cost a lot more to run it and more on and off of it will be concerned with the content.

    Mike Kennedy I agree. For me personally, a self-hosted node is for myself, family and friends I know personally. A small handful of people. Not a pod of thousands of users. This is how the federated network should operate, in theory, to bring the maximum of benefits.

    There are some roadblocks to this though: some are implementation specific -- like how awkwardly some of the data is replicated, hasthtags being one case, hampering discovery -- or how little attention has been paid to making installation easy for an average user. Both these factors push users towards populous instances of thousands of users and when that happens security, funding, and availability become major concerns.
