Search and data being their core business, Gmail being a gigantic data warehouse (better qualified than here) , I'd bet Gmail should be there for quite some time Klaus Guhr come on, android is probably their second data hog... And please don't tell me about Apple! Keep your android platform and run LineageOS. Reclaim your freedom and privacy!
I don't use Gmail for private stuff; I have another email for that. Gmail is for my public stuff and if it closes, I think I can easily find someone else to host my mail.
Picasa never died: all data from Picasa was migrated to GPhotos, and all Picasa links were even forwarded to GPhotos. (AFAIK, Picasa links still work, redirecting to GPhotos.) So Picasa was effectively just renamed, not killed.
Halfey Halphstein please name one feature Picasa was missing, compared to GPhotos. i used Picasa heavily, and use GPhotos multiple times a day, and i can't think of a single missing feature.
Even if Picasa had other features, it effectively wasn't killed: all user data was migrated automatically to GPhotos, requiring no effort whatsoever on the part of the user.
Stephan Beal I kinda have stopped using Google Photos when Picasa was killed but back then one missing feature that immediately came in my mind was the ability to sort albums by names. I think there were other things too can't remember much but one thing I remember clearly is the desktop software was fun to use. In my book Picasa was indeed killed, the pictures stored in PWA didn't.
OK I use GPhotos but only for automated backup of photos in my devices. Not using it for managing albums.
I stopped using Picasa when Google stopped updating the Linux version. It stopped being an issue when GPhotos became much better, and i like that I can use it from my phone, my desktop and my Chromebook.
for those that still dont understand why google photo is a fail project and why picasa was great until now some basic feature still missing on "photo shit" like moving picture from album to other wich is a basic fonction and many many other simple fuction that exiuted on picasa web album and on google+ album are not on this failed product ...
zdig one the concept of "moving" photos is a non-issue in GPhotos because any photo can be in any number of albums at a time. To call GPhotos a "failed project" is downright absurd: millions of people use it to good effect every day. It's easily one of my most-used apps (both on Android and via the web interface).
