Google+ sunsets in August 2019. Many Google+ers have gone to MeWe. You might be considering it too. Here's a MeWe sample account page. MeWe charges monthly for storage over 8GB. MeWe reminds me of Facebook. It has a feature that allows you to create private groups.
If you post a lot of content, to remain a free MeWe user you'll have to delete content before it reaches 8GB of storage or pay a monthly storage fee (see attachment on fees).

Well the fees will limit my usage.
ReplyDeleteSo far I am not convinced that MeWe works for me. But ultimately social media is about the people. So we will have to see where my people settle.
Why will the fees limit your usage William Robison ? As you know all the other services are "free as in gratis", because they use your data. If you are not the product, the service provider need to fund it in another way, e.g. by charging. Seems that users are not willing to pay for having their privacy protected. As I understand you get far by the 8GB of storage on mewe, users report of 3-4 years of usage before their qota reach the limit. (normal usage).
ReplyDeleteMy solution is I'm keeping my photos in Google Photos and linking them in posts, so i don't use excessive storage space and it means not laboriously uploading my images yet again.
ReplyDeleteThe big drawback for me is, f a community is created there are no categories., for group members to place their posts
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget how much data 8GB really is. 1GB of text is 1.96 million words in English[^1] - far more than even a prolific novelist can ever write in an entire career. If one is careful to rescale images so that they're 2MB or less, 8GB is enough to hold at least 4000 of them (at 2MB/photo, 8000 at 1MB/photo). If if one only uploads high-res photos (3-4MB each), mewe's free quota will hold a minimum of 2000 of them (at 4MB/photo). That's more photos than the vast, vast majority of Plussers will ever upload.
ReplyDelete[1] = the average word length in English is 5.1 characters, and all English characters use a single byte. Most other languages have multi-byte characters, so their word count/ideogram limit will be lower, but still effectively unattainable within a single GB of space.
As someone said to me elsewhere recently, if you're not throwing a few dollars to the platform, then it isn't the product. YOU are.
ReplyDeleteAlso something to keep in mind as folks make their choices.
While 8GB is a lot of storage in terms of text and imagery, it's still a good point to keep in mind.
ReplyDelete...is that an 8gig cap per user? or per group/community?
ReplyDeletePat Johnston when someone posts files/photos to a group, that comes from the poster's quota. Groups have no quota.

Knut Erik Hollund to begin with, as I said, I am not yet convinced that MeWe works for me. Just like I refuse to pay for cable because I get everything I want OTA. I am at the point in my life I want fewer bills not more. A dollar here, a dollar there, another around there, and that that other place times five is twenty bucks. Maybe there are more important things to me that social media/networks.
ReplyDeleteKnut Erik Hollund Erik as I understand it, Minds.com does NOT use our data. It's open source so anyone that tries will be discovered.
ReplyDeleteStephan Beal Thanks for the stats. I don't want to spend my time making sure that images and gifs are under a certain space limit before posting or sharing. That's why I don't like Pluspora. Pluspora won't let me post most of my gifs because they are over the size limit.
ReplyDeleteCall me lazy, but I also don't want to monitor my space used. If forced to delete images and gifs when approaching MeWe space limitations, that could take some time deciding what to keep and what to save off the MeWe platform.
Kathie Gifford Good good!
ReplyDeleteRick Wayne If I'm wrong someone correct me, but as I understand it, minds.com - Minds does not sell your data. It's an open source platform so if any developers try to do that, it will be discovered and shut down. Minds is a Google+ like experience except it doesn't have communities that I'm aware of.
ReplyDeleteMeWe is a Facebook-like experience with Chat and private groups that requires a monthly monetary investment after your usage exceeds 8 gigs unless you delete your content to stay under the 8 gigs storage. I can't even keep up with notifications...LOL.
I don't think MeWe is like Facebook at all. Who said that? That's not my experience at all.
ReplyDeleteI like its Groups functionality much better than here, but then I was never big into Communities.
I'm also not sure being open source prevents data sale. One could scrape a database and sell it without it having to be in the app code. I'm not sure that is any kind of protection.
Kathie Gifford being open source doesn't stop them from selling your data, but it would permit anyone to see if their core product software (those parts which are open source) was doing something "undesirable" with it. There's nothing in the world stopping their so-called backoffice processes (which are all hidden from users' views) from taking anything they want from their database and doing anything at all with it. THAT SAID: i have absolutely no idea what Minds's policy is on that, so i'm not accusing them of anything.
ReplyDeleteIt's a closed walled garden. No obvious way to share outside or be discovered. For me that makes it a no-go
ReplyDeleteAlan Cox "no obvious way" ==> "no way at all, not even internally to mewe". There is no mechanism whatsoever to refer to a given post or comment from anywhere, not even within other mewe posts or comments. No content (except for the up-coming "public pages") is viewable from outside mewe or indexable by search engines. They cannot change that behaviour without breaking their privacy-by-design policy. See (https://plus.google.com/+StephanBeal/posts/1mxwWDZy6Ta) for examples of why they cannot support those features. Mewe is very much a walled-in garden.
ReplyDeleteplus.google.com - Perhaps of interest to those evaluating MeWe as a possible new home in a post...
You can share posts in Minds.com to Facebook or Twitter.
ReplyDeleteStephan Beal Very good analysis of MeWe. I shared your post to Public and to the group Google+ Mass Migration. I'm going to Minds at minds.com - https://www.minds.com/CultureKat and would like to check out your content if you have a presence there.
ReplyDeleteStephan Beal You may be right about the "vast majority," but my G+ tribe is the photography community. I have many thousands of high-resolution jpgs in Google Photos (a collection I began back in the days of Picasa), and regularly post 10-20 more per week in various group photo projects. Any service without either plentiful, robust photo storage, or ability to embed images directly from Google photos, is useless to me and mine.
ReplyDeletePat Kight for that type of sharing it makes sense to simply share links to gphoto albums. GPhoto supports putting a photo in any number of albums and creating ad-hoc (unnamed) albums, making it space-efficient to share. i have dozens of gigs in gphotos, and that's how i share them.
ReplyDeleteKathie Gifford regarding Minds: i currently have an account for evaluation purposes but their token/boost system (buying relevance within the network) just doesn't sit well with me (the implication of active competition for eyeballs bothers me), so i'm unlikely to stay there :/. As far features go, though, they seem to be a near-perfect match for g+.
Daniel Runyon EnigmaRamus...what a clever moniker!
ReplyDeleteDaniel Runyon When I try to post a gif on Pluspora, if it is too large which is frequently the case, a rejection notification flashes quickly with a size limit that I could not read fast enough.
ReplyDeleteDo you put hashtags in your posts because if you do, on most platforms you'll have more engagement?
Stephan Beal see this is why l liked Google+ . I always wanted an explanation for MB and GB. Not exactly a techie here. Lol. Now I'll keep this in mine for my flashdrives and memory sticks for my consoles and my consoles and anything else as well. Thank you.😄😄😄
ReplyDeleteRose tyler conventionally, though it's not true anymore for non-English symbols, 1 letter or punctuation mark is 1 byte. 1 MB is either 1 million or 1.048 million bytes, depending on how one counts (long story!). 1 GB is 1000 MB (a billion bytes). That's a boatload of data, but images and videos take up boatloads of space.
ReplyDeleteStephan Beal Thanks. I'll keep that in mind.
ReplyDeleteHashtags are not a solution for communities or collections. Anyone can post anything to any hashtag and there's nothing you can do about it.
ReplyDeleteYou cannot ban bad actors from doing it. You cannot have private hashtags. You cannot organize hashtags in you follow list. You cannot follow hashtags posted by a specific user. You cannot block hashtags. For instance, neither a use nor a podmin can block NSFW posts from showing.
And you cannot do any sort of compound hashtag actions. For instance, "follow the #photography hashtags except for posts that also have the #NSFW hashtag"
Hashtags are okay for some use cases, but they in no way substitute for complex features like communities or collections.
Scott Jordan If you are an open source application developer, sign up to provide the 'communities' functionality, if possible, on Minds.com
ReplyDeleteKathie Gifford Sorry, these days I have a dozen G+ tabs open to various threads talking about just what the hell we are going to do now that G+ is going away. I posted the "hashtag" comment to the wrong one.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, I am a C# dev so I will not be able to add to the codebase (not that I have time with 3 kids anyway).
But of growing concern to me is that more and more I am seeing discussions (not this thread) where people are expressing that they dislike G+ style Communities (groups) and Collections on Diaspora and are saying that they do not want them implemented at all for anyone. They do not like that so they want to discourage anyone else from getting them. They are saying that hashtags are some magical solution to everything whereas I find them to be a crude, blunt instrument where precision is needed.
Anyway, one of those threads is where I intended to post that comment. I just got my tabs mixed up.
