I have joined both pluspora and mewe.

I have joined both pluspora and mewe. Because the pluspora "pod" has recently and suddenly been flooded with G+ refugees, I would say the overall quality of posters and content there is excellent. The "stream" is everything anyone posts, and not the sort of thing you'd likely follow in the long term - as a few thousand G+ folks have arrived in the past day the "stream" is filling with purveyors of their photographic efforts (not a major focus of mine), and memes; but it is possible both to follow individuals like a circle, and hashtags marking topics; and thus avoid the uninteresting bits. A group could choose their own obscure hashtag and exchange posts that would not come to the attention of most users unaware of the hashtag (though all their posts would be viewable by anyone in the main stream). The community is too small to attract spam so far. Pluspora is part of a larger diaspora.org project and there are other pods. One can add contacts from other pods and thus see broader content; some of which is on par with what I have found on G+. I find that encouraging.

The mewe community is a bunch of groups all in one basket - one server I think. It seems to be long-established, but of lower content quality (a bunch of nut-jobs, imho). The entire content is contained in groups, so you would only follow groups of interest and never see the content of the other groups. That would be a good thing if G+ emigrees were to flood the community with a surge of quality, but quality content is not something you can go and tap into today - rather, something that would have to be built one user at a time. Mewe groups have an administrator and they can be open membership or by application - I have not seen mention of moderator positions within the couple of groups I visited.

  1. oops, this should have been in "Personal Reviews . . . " but I cannot move it.

  2. Cade Johnson I am a bit confused. I first went to diaspora and created an account. Then I went to pluspora and created a login. I see how to add other people and I read how to sign up for a pod. I think I hit “get started” but then that makes me go to a third site to create a login. Shouldn’t this all be some sort of smooth flow?

  3. as I understand it Marsha Leigh, each "pod" stands alone, but one can communicate between pods. Your diaspora account may be at their wiki. You could have an account in your name on each separate pod (I made accounts on two pods). But there is little advantage to it; you can "follow" anyone on any pod (once you find them). You can view content posted publicly on your pod, content posted by those you follow, or content filtered by hashtags (I don't know yet if that is from all pods or, more likely only from 'your' pod)

  4. Ok I get it now. Pluspora IS a pod and I’m seeing lots of G+ friends adding me there.

  5. correction about the pluspora "stream" - it contains everything anyone on the pod posts "public", but posters can direct their post only to selections of users in a way analogous to addressing a "Circle" - in fact, diaspora.org suggests the circle concept at G+ arose from them. They call it "aspects" instead of circles. whatever.

  6. Cade Johnson I like that and already creating my own as people add me. Very cool!

  7. What keeps me from MeWe is the fact that it's a single company, again. Pluspora is just a Diaspora pod. If they should close some day, I can just move to another pod.

  8. Richard Körber I was wondering about that. Is it possible to export data from one pod and upload it to a new one (i.e. migrate) or do you just have to start again the new identity on a different pod?

  9. I plan to have two identical accounts and follow myself reciprocally. Then I should have a copy? Not really sure, actually. I am giving it a try. cadejohnson@pluspora.com and cade.johnson@diasp.org

  10. I think you only see everything that contains a tag you follow, don't you? As well as everything by everybody you follow. It would be nice to filter a bit more. I might not want to see all content from everybody I follow.

  11. Giovanni Moretti A good question, actually. I have exported my profile on Pluspora, and in that file I found my contacts and my postings. So basically it should be possible, if there is an import functionality on the other pod. There is an issue for that pending on Github for some years now, so maybe it will be possible some day? However, if one pod should shut down, it is likely that I can keep most of my contacts, even if we move to different pods. Now that G+ closes, I will definitely lose many of my contacts.

  12. In diaspora (pluspora, for example) you view the stream, you see everything public on the "pod". If you view aspects, you see the selected subsets of "contacts'" postings (even if they are not on the same pod). If you view hashtags you see postings that contain the hashtag(s). Three ways to view.

  13. The pluspora pod was created by two Plussers ( Di Cleverly and David Thiery) specifically for Plussers. You must have a G+ presence to be included.

  14. I don't think they have any check for a G+ presence.
