I'm the moderator of a HUGE community of videogames of 34.800 members of Google+, where on earth will we go? I have been reading about the alternatives. Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest or similar ones are OUT OF THE QUESTION. I want to have a place where I share interests in form of blogs with WRITTEN TEXT, not a place with mainly "images" as instagram. But I also want my profile to be absolutely PUBLIC, so any people can SEE IT WITHOUT HAVING AN ACCOUNT in the site. You don't need to have a Google+ profile to see other google users' profiles that are public, like mine. For Pinterest, for example, if you don't have it, you can't even see it without the site "asking you the damn thing over and over to sign in". I want a site like this, there is no other one. People who don't like too crowded places are the ones who chose Google platform. Because other well known ones AREN'T the option.

I have taken a long time to answer because many people comment on my posts and I barely have time to answer everyone. I'm thinking about Twitter for all what I have read. I don't like much other options. It was out of the question first, but I have nothing against it, as I have against facebook, for example. Instagram sucks for a person like me. Reddit is an option, yes. Anyway I have several months to decide, I won't base my decision in a hurry. I'll read well what I need, and later on, I'll calmly decide where I'm going. That IF Google+ literally decides to shut down. For the time being, I'm helping to spread the word about "a petition for Google Plus not to shut down". ReplyDeleteE. Krieger thanks for the reply. the reason why I suggested reddit is that yous aid something about a huge comunity. it is far easier to locate posts and see threads of comments, to set up rules and moderate stuff.
ReplyDeletetwitter is somewhat clunky if you are searching for back posts. OTOH twitter is easy to use, but to have a community kind of thing you need a common hashtag for all users to use to keep it together. If it is just for your personal use broadcasting to followers, though, it is probably more than sufficient.

ReplyDeleteE. Krieger I've just run across this post looking for something else, but also had run into someone at Reddit with a similar concern: migrating a large (400k+ member) community.
ReplyDeleteI'm putting together a Wiki addressing migration needs, planning, and concerns. It seems that G+ Community migration itself is a potentially significant goal.
So far there's just one item on the FAQ, but the general migration advice should also apply, and I'd like to focus in on this problem.

Edward Morbius as long as the site is public and allows non members to see my posts, allows images and people of the site commenting my posts, I'll think about it. I still don't know where I'll go. But I have thought about Twitter because it has groups where members can comment, I like that feature. But I don't think young Google+ members are going to join twitter... I'm into a dilemma, more or less 😭😭😭😭😭

Edward Morbius No, I won't migrate content. I will just possibly create a new group or community in other site. I'm the mod in a big Assassin's Creed community on Google Plus, I have full moderator options but I haven't created it. I'm the only active mod, for years 😊

ReplyDeleteEdward Morbius Hi, I haven't made any other one somewhere. I am too busy with real life, to have the time to manage another community. Besides, I have't found ANY the size as big as Google+ or with the same public characteristics, in which I can post both images and long texts with public links, for every person online to see the website without having to join in (as MeWe/Minds/Plusplora,) etc. None are my type. Google+ is irreplaceable!

ReplyDeleteRemember, you're not looking for something that's better than or even as good as Google+. You're looking for something that will keep your community together.
I'd also strongly recommend selecting based on momentum rather than position as they say -- don't just jump on what you think is best right now, but which can provide in the future.
That said: a mailing list, Google Groups, or a subreddit might be your best bets. The first two will give you direct access to the subscriber list, and hold things together. Reddit doesn't let you see who's subscribed, but otherwise has very good tools.
There are other options, I suspect most are too alpha for you to consider strongly right now.
Edward Morbius hi, what do you mean with Google groups if Google+ is going to shut down? Oh damn. I didn't know about reddit didn't let you see who subscribed. I won't go anywhere, I'm tired of being the mod, to be honest
