I think Hubzilla is a good candidate.
Friendica requires MariaDB/MySQL. As the database guy, I have to say: 100% fail (please no discussions, we've had them all), that disqualifies it. Hubzilla seems to be more open; Diaspora as well, but i said to be difficult.
What else is there? It has to be a decentralised system in any case.

Unfortunately no mobile client available yet, which is a kind of showstopper for me.
ReplyDeleteMark Nowiasz Actually not necessary, it works fine in a (mobile) browser.
ReplyDeleteIsabella LeCour I second that. The problem with Hubzilla as of this moment is it’s convoluted installation process (unless I’m missing something).
ReplyDeleteIsabella LeCour I hear you! I’m also up, scrambling around to find a solution for the 43k+ philosophy community. It’s an unfortunate mess! :(
ReplyDeleteWhat's really nice about hubzilla (apart from the fact that there's no mobile client i.e. no push notifications) is that it could also work as a Nextcloud replacement - it has got caldav, carddav and webdav.
ReplyDeleteMark Nowiasz there's actually a mobile client called nomad, so far only for Android, available via f-droid for example

Isabella LeCour so far I’m loving MeWe. It’s everything I always wanted G+ to be. Its feature-set is superior to G+’s.
ReplyDeleteThere's an open Hubzilla instance at https://hub.toot.cat run by long-time G+ user Woozle Hypertwin. She also admins the https://toot.cat Mastodon instance.
ReplyDeleteHubzilla, Diaspora, Pluspora, Friendica, and Mastodon are all part of the Fediverse and interconnect and intercommunicate, so the distinctions are reasonably minor between them. UI/UX, and setup/admin, do vary, if you're going that route.
Self hosting and profile migration are also possiblr.
I'm dr@hub.toot.cat
(The "edmorbius" part got lost....)
Edward Morbius since you say Hubzilla and diaspora* and Mastodon are all part of the Fediverse, how can I follow your hubzilla account from Mastodon? Searching for it does not seem to work.
ReplyDeleteFilip H.F. Slagter I am trying to sort that out.
ReplyDeleteIn theory, they're all interconnectable. In practice ... theory and practice differ.
Isabella LeCour Who brought medium in the discussion as a replacement? Right, nobody. So don't talk against it.
ReplyDeleteI only cited a medium article about HubZilla, a distributed system.
Let's keep the discussion on-track, peeps, thanks.
