It's becoming more and more clear over on the "Fediverse" sites (Diaspora, including Pluspora, Friendica, etc.) that we're not wanted there.
Which is a shame, because I was starting to like Friendica. It's a little rough around the edges, sure, but so was this place when we all moved in, and we made it home.
But no. We're not as enlightened as they are, to have been on a private network this whole time. We're overly dramatic, and too tribal, and expect to be abused. But, like a certain public official said recently, "some of them are not that bad," so everything fine, right?

I'm feeling pretty good about MeWe so far. It feels like they actually want us there and have already started working on implementing changes to make us more comfortable.
ReplyDeleteMark Weinstein, the founder of MeWe, is in regular contact with some of us at G+ and answers our questions. Here is the latest Q&A with him (I keep updating that post as new Q&As arrive, so please revisit the post for the latest info.).
ReplyDeleteplus.google.com - Q&A regarding MeWe features By Mark Weinstein on G+ (edited for clarity): +A...
I don't know what your interactions have been like, but I haven't had that impression at all. Seems they're all welcoming G+ refugees, especially Pluspora.
ReplyDeletePluspora was set up by two G+ers so of course they are welcoming to G+ers.
ReplyDeleteBoth MeWe and Pluspora have seemed like they want to be welcoming. Unfortunately I’ve only found two people in my circles who are on MeWe, and the G+ Exiles group I joined was less than inspiring in terms of quality. Pluspora seems more promising at the moment.
ReplyDeleteWe are moving in large numbers to other places that already have their own customs and cultures in place. It would be more surprising if we didn't encounter a certain amount of friction as we learn and adjust to each other.
ReplyDeleteI personally have encountered no lack of goodwill on the part of the Fediverse.
I have seen a lot of welcome, and a small number of snapping, snarling, you-damn-kids-get-off-my-lawn attack dogs.
ReplyDeleteBodhipaksa Maybe these things are bit hit and miss at the start. I'm coming around to going to platforms where people and groups here I know are moving. So far that's Friendica and MeWe.
ReplyDeleteThe odd thing for me is how this mirrors a shakeup in one of my interests - using Open Simulator - used to create and run virtual worlds. Recently a big grid called Inworldz closed down It had thousands of members with content they'd either built or bought in that world. There's lots of communities and collections here on G+ with #OpenSim #OpenSimulator stuff.
Many when to other Opensimulator worlds and grids. That was very easy to do because they all more or less ran the same software and more or less it was the same experience. And the people running the other grids were eager to see new people in those worlds. But some just didn't make the jump, having invested a lot of attention, effort and interaction in Inworldz. It would not be the same. Those either retired (the most likely outcome) or even moved on to other platforms like Sansar or VR Alt.
So I guess in this instance, going from G+ to something that is now really that similar to G+, it may ruffle a few feathers in long term residents of those platforms. I've mentioned that I've come from G+ in the ones I'm trying, but G+ had LOTS of communities with lots of interests, and just being a G+ refugee doesn't mean you have anything else in common with them. Unless that is, you knew and interacted them or the community here.
I haven't seen any unusual attitudes, but for the most part I'm joining groups with other plussers I know or just add people I know to a circle stream. I'm taking it slow about posting publicly and not posting in any of the established groups on other networks if I do join until I get a feel for the culture and pecking order already there. Because G+ was new the whole network generally developed a culture. Existing networks will have their own culture so plussers might not fit in so that why we need to create our little silos that work. A social network is a series of tools for communication like email. I don't see a need to fit in with the other people there any more than giving my IRL friends more than 5 minutes to talk about their favorite sports ball team before getting bored and finding someone else at the bar to talk to.
ReplyDeleteSallie Alys Montuori Why am I reminded of how real-world refugees are often treated when they have to leave their homes? There's a human metaphore here, and it isn't pretty.
ReplyDeleteBodhipaksa it's easier if communities reform there as a group. I am already linked with over 150 people there.
ReplyDeleteHowever, to mirror your statement, I did let them scan my very, very large contact book (that I have been building and migrating for over 20 years) and they only had one of my contacts. Also, ironically, it was somebody I didn't really know and didn't know why they were in my contacts.
If there is any negative feelings from the existing members of another social site it could be due to the new members walking in the door and immediately saying ‘I don’t like this, when are you adding that, what about this?’
ReplyDeleteLet’s be a bit more ‘Ok what features does this site have and how do we use them’ first before demanding changes.
What signs are there that we're not wanted at Diaspora? I've heard mostly positive signals, not just from Pluspora, but also from Diaspora HQ. (Is there an HQ? Apparently.) It's true that we've presented us as very picky, but most of the stuff we want is stuff the Diaspora community also wants.
ReplyDeleteI've not encountered any negativity on either platform, but then I've only added people on MeWe that i had here on G+. I've not used pluspora as much because the Diaspora apps suck.
ReplyDeleteThere are about 5K G+ers that are on the federated social web already and likely more joining it over time. I am on two Friendica nodes. What makes you think people are not wanted in the Fediverse?
ReplyDeleteI've felt welcomed (if occasionally lonely) on Diaspora since 2011.
ReplyDeleteNot so lonely as of October, 2018.
