    what does this extension do? I downloaded it and selected Options. It goes to a blurb about diaspora, apart from that it is doing sod all.

    I guess you disabled/hide your extensions in chrome. You shuld be able to show your extensions by drag/drop right to the URL-Field. (see picture)

    You also should be able to open the options menu unter the following link:
