Looking for G+ Alternatives? See / add to / verify the G+ Alternatives Spreadsheet
If you're looking for a single source for comparison of the options in front of you, especially with a group or Community to migrate, this is a prime tool.
You'll find it in the Google+ Mass Migration sidebar (top-bar on mobile-web) under "About Community".
https://plus.google.com/communities/112164273001338979772/
This has been filled in tremendously since I last looked at it, with 31 options completed (I just added Tildes, a discussion forum type site).
Trey Harris put a lot of work into setting this up, and it's becoming a very useful tool. Take advantage of it.
Thanks, Trey, and other compilers!

Is there another spreadsheet with specific instances of nodes on Mastodon/D* and similar networks?
ReplyDeleteNot all "instances" are created equal and some even have a theme or focused topic...
Mike Crosson That would be a heavy lift. There's a very large number of Mastodon instances and even the much smaller Diaspora system has about 200.
ReplyDeletei occasionally use two: Mastodon.social it's fine, as is the smaller mastodon.cloud
i am playing with pluspora.com which now has about 7000 users many G+ Castaways.
mastodon.social - Mastodon
A super resource. Very tough to narrow the scope. What many G+ Castaways need is a short list: try these three or maybe six max.
ReplyDeletelife is short. 😎
Guys, you have just under 10 months, even if you devote a couple of months to checking out the alternatives you still have at least 6 months to choose and migrate.
ReplyDeleteThe spreadsheet is a list of alternatives, not an exhaustive review of each, it's a resource you can use to make your own shortlist, based on your own needs.
Ron K Jeffries I can appreciate that.
ReplyDeleteWhat if the admins / happy users submitted instances?
Although full coverage of all nodes is impossible, it might still be useful to record some specific ones for discovery. For example someone yesterday mentioned a gaming oriented mastodon instance that had upped message limit to 5000 characters, making it quite a bit more interesting than a stock instance. Having a directory to find such specific instances could be interesting.

Should forum software be included? Such as Drupal, phpBB, VBulletin. There are others.
