Now that I’ve spent a couple of days with MeWe and Pluspora I feel like I have a good general idea of them. I’m starting to look at others now so that I can make a proper decision of where I want to land. Today I’m checking out Friendica. It’s a decentralized social network akin to Pluspora, but it has the means of bridging to other social networks. This bridging ability gives it a hub-like feel to me. I am able to link to individual users on Diaspora/Pluspora, Mastodon, and Twitter. I am told that the test posts I made on Friendica appeared on Pluspora but I’m unable to see them. I have been unsuccessful at pushing posts to Twitter.

Friendica has a few major issues. For starters there are a ton of options at set-up – enough that I think most casual users will simply walk away. Then it has issues with crashing and it has no mobile to speak of. There’s a junk app on the Play Store and there’s the clunky mobile site and that’s it other than desktop. I’m probably going to pass on Friendica for these reasons although I’ll probably still monkey with it over the next week. #pluspora #friendica #gplusrefugee

  1. An Android app is pretty much a must-have for me, but I'm interested in what you find.

  2. I like pluspora. It’s a bit rough around the edges but I think it has promise.

  3. I’ve given MeWe a try and after a day am now fairly familiar with it. I’ll probably also tryout Pluspora upon recommendation of my circles on Google+ and make a firm decision nearer closing time.

  4. Gary Brookes I think waiting is the best answer. The boss of MeWe has being doing a lot of Q&As with new users, insisting that desirable new functionality is on its way. With all of the tech people that are migrating from G+, Diaspora might finally start getting a volunteer crew working on spiffing up the place.

  5. Roy Hembree What I’d like from Diaspora for staters is an App that works on Apple devices and not have to access Pluspora via the Safari browser, although you can’t have everything you want at once.

  6. So far, I like the couple of groups I joined in MeWe and suggested a few things to the developers. I like that they respond and move fast to bring fixes and features. Beyond those couple of groups in MeWe--holy cow--scary folks live there. What a country (or world, I guess).

  7. My concern about MeWe is that it's centralized. Owned, as far as I know. So users depend on the whims of the owner(s). If they decide to censor, or sell our data off, or shut down...we're screwed.

    Am I wrong about that?

  8. Peter Maranci you're not wrong with that but I also have similar concern about decentralized social media. A decentralized social media will last only as long as the pod owner maintain it. An ideal solution for decentralized social media is each user host their own pod.

  9. Halfey Halphstein My ideal would be something like Usenet - an addition to the basic features of the internet that would be neither owns nor controlled by any individual entity or government. But I don't suppose that's likely to happen.

  10. Gary Brookes this was posted by Di Cleverly so I think she has either connections with the higher ups for Diaspora or she may be one of the ones behind it. She posted this.
“ Pluspora, which is part of diaspora, will get more like Google Plus over time. The developers are now taking with incoming Plussers about coding projects and improvements. Our goal is to add smaller interest centered pods that crosstalk together, so it still feels like the larger G+ environment.
I really appreciate the enthusiasm and support, you guys! Everyone has been so awesome! “

  11. Halfey Halphstein the big advantage of the decentralized networls is that you can just export all your data (posts, images, etc.) from on pod and install it into another, if your pod owner chooses to close his or her instance.

I do not see everybody hosting his own pod as a feasible solution atm, since installation ist only for the tech-savvy. In addition: even if I am able to do so and just installed a hubzilla pod for testing, I do not want the hassle of constantly updating it and securing it against attacks. That should do someone with way more experience and time.

  12. Has anyone tried minds.com? It's an open source and decentralized social networking platform where users are rewarded with Minds tokens for contributions to the community. Our goal is to
build a new model for content creators to take back their Internet freedom, revenue and social reach. Here's the whitepaper: cdn-assets.minds.com - cdn-assets.minds.com/front/dist/assets/documents/Whitepaper-v0.3.pdf

  13. Rewarding contributors sounds like a spammer's heaven to me. I really hope they have some good anti-spam measures!

  14. Kathie Gifford I'm planning to give it a real go next week. I know that Eli Fennell jumped in with both feet. Hopefully he'll comment.

  15. Roy Hembree I'm on Pluspora, but haven't really been Posting. I'll give it more a go soon.

  16. Kathie Gifford I tried it, but I found it really boring.

  17. Roy Hembree Fairly clean layout, reminiscent of G+, but you have an in-network crypto economy of tokens earned for engaging and sharing. You can spend those in-network for an ad-free and Verified Plus account with some extra features. You can also give Tokens to other Users, say to show your support to someone who Shares great stuff (a la Patreon), and tokens can also be redeemed for cash-redeemable cryptos (I have not tried any of this yet, mind you).

Literally rewards engagement and sharing, in-network and off. Has a Thumbs Down option, which I think is meant to discourage low quality Posts and Comments.

Users can also spend tokens to 'Boost' their Posts and Profiles, which is how the advertising side of it works, so those will be shown either as native Posts or sidebar Profile ads, but Plus accounts don't get shown these.

It seems quite possible from my brief experience to make enough just from using it to pay for the Plus account.

It also has the ability to create an actual Blog Post, as well as your basic G+/Facebook-like Social Shares.
