Pursuant to adding instant translation to hubzilla/diaspora/etc: the google api charges by the code point character, $20/1000000 characters. Convenient translation, therefore, could be an enhanced service that is charged for at a pretty reasonable rate.
Yes translation is what's often missing from most of G+ alternatives. It's one the great things about G+ where it has enabled me to befriend those from China and Japan. While those people I befriended can communicate in English with me they mostly don't use English for their own posts. With translation I was able to follow what they were up to.
