Re: #MeWe #showstopper #pay_for_storage
Default #storage space limited to max. #8GB? More only if you pay?
Whatever you create/post (groups, images, posts) adds up to that limit? :-o

This is a German post that alleges the above.

  1. That was my understanding based on their business model. But it is not well-publicized.

  2. Yes this is true. The cheapest plan is $5/mo will get you 50GB. And yes any files you post (photos/videos/music/documents) will count against that.

    ReplyDelete
  3. In addition there are optional special features including extra storage (8GB is free, and 50GB is $4.99 per month), Secret Chat (like WhatsApp only without their egregious tracking) for $.99 cents per month, Custom Emojis at $.99 cents a packet, plus MeWe Pages (coming soon) at $1.99 per month, and special games exclusive to MeWe members.

  4. And they also have an option to download your content, right beneath the space payments, clearly giving you the option of making space and so avoiding needing to buy more

    ReplyDelete
  5. It makes sense. This kind of things are expensive to run, the money has to come from somewhere, and their model is preferable to them selling your personal data.

  6. karen hayward Downloading personal files doesn't clear the space. I've tried. You still need to delete the files manually.

  7. So 5 bucks a month to Google will get you the entire gsuite. I don't understand the logic behind paying a limited private social network 5 bucks a month for far less. Those who are willing to pay would likely just sign up for gsuite. Others will go with the free social network managed by users not companies.

  8. Halfey Halphstein yes of course that makes sense 😊😊😊😊😊

  9. I am not a fan of Google but, for those willing to subscribe to services here is the point of comparison

  10. Shelenn Ayres You don't have to understand that, you only need to believe in freedom of choice.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Halfey Halphstein Choices are freedom but not all choices made have the best results - especially choices made without being informed. One goal here in this community is to share information so we can all be better informed to make better choices.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Shelenn Ayres I believe we've been pretty informed already so can we please move on and stop attacking at every mention of MeWe?

    ReplyDelete
  13. One red flag that goes up for me is when any site that is commercial does not put their pricing for any and all products and services in a clearly distinguished page. It makes me distrust them immediately.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Halfey Halphstein Oh now you want to censor people? I have not told anyone to move along - including you. Think about what you just said and consider the tools Google offers you to block those you don't want to see posts from.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Shelenn Ayres You yourself sound like someone who'd censor somebody to me. I imagine if you run a friendica or diaspora pod you probably would not let MeWe's owner or Mark Zuckerberg in. Maybe I'm wrong but at this point you sound like you REALLY want everybody to distance themselves from MeWe or any company-run social platform.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Halfey Halphstein Sounds like you may be lacking full disclosure. Are you someone who financially benefits from MeWe signups etc?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Shelenn Ayres No. I just don't care much. I have presence on almost every network (including diaspora since 2011). However I think one platform here is being singled out which I think is quite unfair.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Putting information out there for others to consider while discussing personal perspectives and criteria for choice facilitates collaborative scrutiny that is mutually beneficial. Anyone lashing out attacking others with personal attacks diminishes the positive impact for everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Halfey Halphstein, you‘re free to block people, actively ignore, or mute this this thread. But please stop telling others in this thread to move on.
I, on the other hand, am free to delete comments in this thread, but I’d rather not.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Halfey Halphstein MeWe is not the only choice that does not meet my personal criteria and I've been clear as to why when I share that information. Perhaps you don't read any of my comments except those associated with MeWe.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Shelenn Ayres I am aware but since people talk about it more it appears often in this community than any other platforms. What I could conclude from your comments is you're trying to say if a platform is run by a company it's bad and should be avoided. For me just because it's run by a company doesn't mean it's bad by default. Sure no one is incorruptible but if someone starts to sound like a religious preacher to me I'd call them out. I also think it's starting to get off-topic here.

  22. Back to the topic of 8GB storage: If your uploaded images average, say, 2MB each, that's 500 images per gig, so 4000 pictures in the free quota (and you always have the option of deleting stuff to free up space). That's far, far more than most plussers have ever posted in their 7 years here. Even 1GB of plain text is an inconceivable amount - far more than a human can type in any reasonable amount of time: 196 million words, using the English average of 5.1 characters per word (pedantically keeping in mind that English, unlike many other languages, uses only 1-byte characters, so that word count is lower, but still effectively unattainable, in many other languages)). Even the prolific Terry Pratchett didn't write that many words.

  23. You are off base in your understanding of my posts if you think I am anti-commerce - I own a business and consider ethics a priority. Part of being ethical is supporting open source if you use it. But, the more important ethical concern is the source of intellectual property.

For social networks, it belongs to the users who contribute it. No company IMO including myself should claim ownership, shared ownership, or sell access to user generated content without full disclosure to users so they may agree or disagree. But in the centralized versus decentralized debate, the centralized approach has proven a failure from a user perspective. The decentralized approach puts the power into the hands of the users and mitigates or eliminates incentives for owners to be corrupt.

There is nothing preventing for-profit efforts from participating alongside non-profit efforts in the federated social web space.

  24. Stephan Beal and still, in pluspora the upload limit is 4.2mb and most people complain it's not enough, lol

But yes - 8Gb is a considerable amount. App is nice. Plenty of functionality.

But I am not going to use WeMe - I tried, and it doesn't feel "home". It is just me. Nothing wrong with it (except I found the UI a bit cartoonish) But conversations are shallow and I get the "omg, I am on Facebook" effect.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I assume "I own a business" is different from saying "a social media run by a business can't be trusted".

    ReplyDelete
  26. Stephan Beal Storage of content is not the only issue - databases will grow quickly. But from a user perspective, if I wanted to be a subscriber, I would want the best deal for my money. Since social media is a sort of virtual home, I would look at it from that perspective.

I am already on G+ with a following is equivalent to I have all my friends and stuff here for an actual home. To consider moving, wherever I move to will have to be attractive enough to take all the time to pack and move.

Cost of staying with GSuite would be:

$5 Professional office suite with 30GB storage

$10 Enhanced office suite with unlimited storage and archiving

$25 Premium office suite with advanced controls and capabilities

    indirect costs: known "neighborhood"

    Cost of moving to MeWe?

    $5 for storage

    unknown costs for other features

no known competitive suite of applications, not equivalent to G+

indirect costs: unknown "neighborhood" but product director stated he is alt-right

    Cost of moving to Minds?

    unknown costs for other features

no known competitive suite of applications, not equivalent to G+

indirect costs: known "neighborhood" actively markets to alt-right businesses and audience

indirect costs: can offset costs by earning/using cryptocurrencies which is an ethics and terrorism issue separate from social media

I realize not everyone cares about ethics or political views and that is not my only criteria either. I've posted my criteria without political considerations.

But the political view of the world by the owners and admins of a social media service directly impacts how they manage that service. So this will directly affect the user experience. It matters. Loss of users and customers over the course of the past two years in many user oriented services is proof of that. My suggestion is to have all the info you need up front and make the best decision you can based on your own priorities. I simply share what information I find and my reasons for my priorities. Cooperation drives collaboration.

  27. Shelenn Ayres Interesting that their plans do not mention G+ at all, despite notice that access to the Plus will be available (at a price) via GSuite. I'm wondering if that's just a case of their advertising not catching up with the recent changes, or if we've been misled.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Shelenn Ayres I don't get your comparison between GSuite and MeWe. They are completely different things.

And if you think you will be able to use the "enterprise" version of G+ you have misread Google blog post.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Pat Kight Gsuite users can use G+ and have been. The wording of the press release implies it will remain available to GSuite users, i.e. "the consumer version will sunset..." because they are implying there must also be another version or two.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Shelenn Ayres yes, but each commercial instance of G+ is private to that organization. It cannot, unless i am very sorely mistaken, be used as a public-facing G+ instance accessible to the rest of the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Stephan Beal not so sure about that since I know gsuiters who post here on the same G+ we are using. Going forward that is why I believe there may be a plan for two versions: one for individual subscribers that would have access to a public G+ and an enterprise version like you described.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Shelenn Ayres I have 2 GSuite, in addition to my personal account. I have G+ on all 3, that's still the "consumer" version of G+.

You can even use a GSuite email to register in Facebook - it doesn't make it Facebook Enterprise.

The GSuite enterprise is a cutdown version where you can only see people from your same organisation.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Piero FilippIN I don't compare the two as complete equivalents. My post refers more to the analogy of buying a new home prospect, i.e. stay or go. (Only for those considering a subscription this is a discussion of possibilities.)

Will my family and I be able to have the same furniture, arrangement, square footage, amenities, location features, etc?

If I move what do I have to give up or what will I gain? How many of my friends will visit me if I move? What is the new neighborhood like? Will I feel at home and safe? What will the impact to my family be? What does my family think?

Given that, there are always tradeoffs when moving and that means people are often attracted to a deal where they get more for their money. It is part of the sales pitch. Google has had their pricing on Gsuite up for some time and their pricing 'for what you get" is more than competitive. Getting more than a social network is a bonus that can close the deal much like upgraded kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor living spaces can close a deal.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Shelenn Ayres yes but you don't get a social network with it. You seem to believe that in August 2019 all the free users will be kicked out of G+ while the GSuite will be allowed to stay. It is not like that.

  36. I found the cost model after 5 minutes of search.
To me, if something is worth using, I do not mind paying for it.
All this "this is the internet, where everything is free if charge" - attitude is a good portion of the reason, why we have this shit that big companies use our data, sell it for advertisement, research, etc.
