So far, I really like the ability of MeWe to create groups and interact in a format most closely resembling Google Communities. They are easy to set up and moderate. Plenty of fun emojis and live group chatting within the group.

The downside: It's difficult to find new people without a known address or link. You really need to start with Groups to find anyone. The other noticeable problem is the sheer number of extremist groups and other anti-intellectuals such as anti-vaxxers. It could use an insurgence of intelligence from the G+ community.

I created a Group for progressive politics and it seems to be workable.

I like Pluspora but it relies heavily on hashtags to find content. I'm simply not a fan of hashtags. You create "groups" of your contacts using My Aspects. But it could use an option to create groups or communities. In addition, I can't seem to find an Edit function to edit posts. I've got a lot to learn.

  1. All of is have a lot to learn Jill H . Thank you for posting your experience with both platforms.

  2. MeWe looks really promising for me. I settled.

  3. I’m guessing that the hashtag becomes the group and they are all public.

  4. A warning regarding pluspora: you cannot edit posts or comments there. That's fine for microblogging but poor for blog- and forum-like traffic.

  5. Evidently Pluspora is working on both post editing and creating groups. They already have circles (aspects). I suspect that this platform will be modified to suit the 1000s of G+ refugees flooding in. They already increased their server capacity after yesterday's deluge. At the moment it's a bit clunky, but the admins are doing a good job posting tips.

I had the same ick reaction when I was browsing the MeWe groups. So much stupid and so much hate. It really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Hopefully there will be a platform that successfully mixes groups/communities with topics. I don't want to interact just with people in chosen communities all the time, and I don't want the firehose of posts that call themselves a certain topic.

  6. For both you need to register before you cant read. That's a bit of a no go.

  7. Martin Krischik There's a way to view Pluspora without having an account, someone posted the link yesterday. I used it before I signed up. Can't find it now but maybe someone else will.

  8. Also not a fan of all the hashtags strewn about. It makes me feel like I'm trying to market my content or something.

  9. Karin Curran Is there any ETA on multifactor authentication or mobile support?

  10. Trey Harris There's an app but as it's not official from Play Store (afaik), use at own risk. Not that I've heard anything bad! Chris Fink can point you there I think. I know the admins have said they're working on the mobile interface.

Thought it already had 2FA, but I couldn't get it to work and I was rushed for time so abandoned it instead of persevering. Figured at this point I've got nothing I need to worry about there.

  11. Karin Curran Yes, that's why my spreadsheet we're building doing feature comparisons are asking people to fill in feature sets they actually know about rather than things claimed by help docs—the "2FA doesn't work" bug has been open for literally years.

  12. Trey Harris LOL thanks for saving me time on that then!

  13. At this point it's hard for me to believe diaspora is working on post-editing feature. Early adopters including myself have been asking for that feature since its inception in 2011, and it's like the most requested feature ever. Feels like it's getting ignored forever.
