The problem I see is this. The guy running WeMe appears to be a loud Libertarian. Despite their solid looking TOS, that is not a good sign. The pluspora/Diaspora model will collapse under spam and illicit/abusive content as soon as it gets above the radar. G+ will continue for G Suite at $5/mo, which is a reasonable price, but it isn't obvious how to manage payments.
As long as you do not connect with the shitheads on MeWe they can't get in contact with you. They can't troll you and can't spam you. I am not a fan of the crap on there but the numbers are still small. The biggest open political group (Trump Supporters) Has barely over 10K members. This is a network whose whole tone an be changed by just a fraction of G+ moving there.
ReplyDeleteMarcus Burggraf But how do "Communities" aka "Groups" work. Isn't joining a group the same as "connecting" with them?
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter if the MeWe founder is a "libertarian" he values privacy and has Tim Berners Lee on their advisory board!
ReplyDeleteKinda, but you don't have to join their groups. If they join yours you can easily block them or they can be kicked out. They still can only interact with you in the group. Sure, moderators may need to work hard for a while or groups need to start closed. But overcoming 10k or even 50k asshats is easy when you get critical mass from G+ is my thought. I would prefer a platform that does not have these idiots but from my research everything even close has the same issue. I would be happy to be proven wrong and someone find a problem user free alternative that isn't Facebook.
ReplyDeleteCarl Draper a professor said, "the right actions for the wrong reasons reinforces the wrong reasons."
ReplyDeleteBecause people move in alignment of those reasons.
It really helps me to keep my eyes open and feet on a straight course.
The question is: what are his fundamental reasons?
(For me, I find Libertarianism to focus on the individual's needs and not on the community's - so a Libertarian building a social platform is very dubious to me. So. No thanks.)
Kiki Jewell here's another old saying: actions speak louder than words :D
ReplyDeleteSpams in MeWe groups are trivial to deal with. A moderator would block the spammer the same way as what we do here in G+.
ReplyDeleteAs for the personal streams, since you can only see the posts of those you are following, i.e. your contacts, you should not follow a spammer account to begin with.
Re 'libertarian', I had the same thought...
ReplyDeleteSimilar problem as here, you might see trolls on friend posts or in comms.
ReplyDeleteYou have to tell friends and Admins to block them, and you can too.
What is this I hear about a limit on the number of emojis (roughly equivalent to pluses here) you can use on posts. Do you really have to buy a $0.99 package of emojis once you exceed that limit? I could not find anything in the FAQs.
ReplyDeleteEdgar Brown I don’t think if that’s true.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine hit a limit. I am not sure if it is per day, week, month, or life. All I know is that she could not use emojis at that point.
ReplyDeleteThat’s weird! I’ve been using them heavily since I joined a couple of days ago and haven’t hit any limit yet.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the limit she hit was for the number of different emojis that can be put on a single post. She is not online, so I don’t know more details.
ReplyDeleteWas she using regular emojis or things like trial version of sticker-like emojis? Because it’s quite weird. Any UTF-8 compatible keyboard can print the standard emojis, no matter what. They are part of the utf-8 standard and as long as a platform can show the utf-8 character encoding, which MeWe can, these emojis can also be shown.
ReplyDeleteEdgar Brown Several have reported the problem, while a few, like me, got "server error" when trying to add emoji.
ReplyDeleteProblem might be related to the crash we caused by all moving there at the same time, yesterday.
There is no written rule on limited emoji numbers, and the fees are for "extra" emojis, as if there wasn't enough...
Today worked fine.
