  1. My major issue with MeWe is that there is no "broadcast" capability. One can only communicate with those who are in one's contacts. Posting a public post is not possible.

  2. Been there for three days now... I'm getting used to it, and I now believe it's a totally viable option for me. A forced choice, of course, but the best I could make.

  3. James Shewmaker some kind of public posting is supposedly on a list of coming features somewhere.

  4. Yup. Public posting should be up by the end of the year. That and permalinks not being available are my biggest problems, and both of those should be addressed. Otherwise, I'm liking it a lot.

Even in its current enclosed state, it's pretty nice once you get enough contacts (but then again, I have a particular person on there that I talk with a lot, so your mileage may vary).

  5. James Shewmaker there's talks of public posts coming.

  6. [ Dude ] Google Plus has public posting and there has never been any kind of issue regarding what content showed up in one's feed. If "bad" content showed up, a person could be muted or blocked. Circles could also be used as a way of controlling what information was "front and center" and what was shunted to one side. I have no idea what you mean by the "jehovas witnesses" [sic] comment. My G+ account has not been spammed by them.

  7. Elisebeth Ross Note though that even with public posting, the posts are only visible to other people who have created an account and are logged in to MeWe. It's not "world-wide" public.

  8. Not decentralized. May shut down as well any moment. 👎

  9. Holger Jakobs You're correct. However, the popular decentralized options (looked at Diaspora, Mastodon so far) offer poor solutions for G+ communities that need to migrate.

  10. James Shewmaker they re workin on that now, and will make it possible (just read owner his post)

But with that logic, radio and television were bad because they allowed people with whom one disagrees to build an audience.

The fact is that one cannot put the genie back into the bottle.

Because "broadcasting" is possible it will exist.

  14. Interestingly, while there is a movement towards decentralization online, there is a movement towards centralization in the USA offline.

A number of years ago, there was a book and a movie called "Cider House Rules." Many urban Americans are opposed to the ideas promoted by that book when it comes to the non-urban areas of the USA.

However, I personally think that this springs forth from a myopic view that exists on both sides of American viewpoints. Policy (prohibition, anyone) is short term. Structure is long term.

Frustration with the states failing to choose their Senators resulted in the 17th amendment. Now both liberal state governments and conservative state governments are voiceless in Washington and impotent in treaties and foreign policy.

The reason is because short term policy destroyed the long term structure. The original purpose of Congress was to give the people a say in Washington through the house and the state governments a say through the Senate.

This is also the reason for some of the provisions in the Constitution which give certain specific powers to one or the other chamber.

One of the reasons that I have a great deal of respect for Lincoln is because he placed maintaining structure ahead of his desired policies.

Some of the things that Trump gets away with today are because of things which his predecessors got away with in the past. We are also moving towards an oligarchy in which the people will have no say in the amending of the Constitution because of the idea of a "living constitution" has been promoted. Guess what happens when Justices who are appointed by republicans don't have the attitude of Scalia but instead place policy ahead of structure.

Taney's Dred Scott decision is typical of giving the court more power than it should have and Stare Decisis is difficult to defeat.

  16. To those of you who plussed my first comment, check out Cake.co. It doesn't provide an alternative to circles but it is good for broadcasting and for discovery of people who you do not know who share similar interests.

  17. Have seen a lot of MeWe posts like this today. I'll have a look at it today.

  18. Juha Lindfors Mastodon is Twitter-like. Interesting and a huge number of sites and large user base.

Pluspora is a better if imperfect fit. It uses Diaspora much smaller in terms of instances and tital users. It is federated with several other systems.

Minds is IMO, crazy crypto currency model.
