Steve McRae I heard the output is JSON format (maybe one of several options, I haven't pulled my dump yet). If so, the file could get converted into a site or (given a capable API) get imported into another social network software. I doubt the latter though, because it makes no sense to me why any „rescue island network“ would want to offer the possibility for uploading (possibly multiple) backups of countless users. The data storage consumption would be beyond expectations.
Steve McRae I'm confident Google will take further steps and that they'll find a way to let users know about basic how-to's. There are months to go, so I'd say: Keep it as laid back as possible, folks, don't panic.
Google announced a long time ago that consumer Hangouts is being shutdown and it will be a business only app. Kind of like Skype is now doing.
It is looking more and more that if you want to use Google services (other than the biggies like Gmail and Calendar), you'll need to subscribe to G Suite.

Olaf Wendt Hangouts is at least easier to replace. There are tons of alternative conferencing tools, including ones with decent end to end security
