Will they continue with Google hangouts (non-business)?

Will they continue with Google hangouts (non-business)?

And what is the best way to archive our communities?

  1. 1. They would, because it’s technically separate from Google+.

    2. I wish I knew.

  2. I'd rather guess Hangouts is going to die as well, pretty soon, see e.g. https://www.androidheadlines.com/2016/10/hangouts-disabled-default-pixel-pixel-xl.html
Allo seems to be(come) the hot thing now — who knows for how long, and Google has not yet decided what will happen to the „messages“ app — you know, that software we could send and receive SMS text messages with...

  3. Olaf Wendt Hangouts is at least easier to replace. There are tons of alternative conferencing tools, including ones with decent end to end security

  4. Patrik Laine's Awkward Beard How will people use Google Hangouts, if they don't have a G+ account any longer to log on with?

  5. Steve McRae oh, btw, regarding your 2nd question about pulling backups: please follow this diacussion (tl;dr: takeout.google.com )

  6. Alan Cox Yes, but hangouts right now are integrated with YouTube so you don't need an additional encoder. (You can just do an event with quick encoder and jump into an HOA)

  7. Olaf Wendt I managed to data dump...just figuring what to do with it to make it practical to upload somewhere. It is very clunky.

  8. Steve McRae I heard the output is JSON format (maybe one of several options, I haven't pulled my dump yet). If so, the file could get converted into a site or (given a capable API) get imported into another social network software.
I doubt the latter though, because it makes no sense to me why any „rescue island network“ would want to offer the possibility for uploading (possibly multiple) backups of countless users. The data storage consumption would be beyond expectations.

  9. Olaf Wendt Ug...the are not going to make migration easy are they.

  10. Steve McRae I'm confident Google will take further steps and that they'll find a way to let users know about basic how-to's. There are months to go, so I'd say: Keep it as laid back as possible, folks, don't panic.

  11. Just assume everything is at risk and move to something else, Google don't deserve the loyalty.

  12. Google announced a long time ago that consumer Hangouts is being shutdown and it will be a business only app. Kind of like Skype is now doing.

It is looking more and more that if you want to use Google services (other than the biggies like Gmail and Calendar), you'll need to subscribe to G Suite.
