With G+ being only the most recent attempt by Google to build a social network, I have to wonder: will there be a new product to take its place by next August? They've clearly demonstrated a desire to keep trying. Have there been any rumors of them developing something else?
Well there is a rumor about project strobe
ReplyDeleteCheri Raptor Can you elaborate?

ReplyDeleteblog.google - Project Strobe: Protecting your data, improving our third-party APIs, and sunsetting consumer Google+
9to5google.com - Google announces Project Strobe to limit third-party access to user data on web, Android
ReplyDeleteEven if it's true, I'm afraid to trust google product...
ReplyDeleteFor now, Google's approach to social centers around in-app Sharing. Google Photos, YouTube, and Google News all have in-app Sharing to varying degrees, Photos especially.
ReplyDeleteThey're also pushing social-ish stuff like Posts with Google.
Not gonna touch new google products anymore.
ReplyDeleteI might think they're willing to exit purely social networks for reasons: plus.google.com - Google+ died because Google Assistant was successful. Previously, G+ was a g...
ReplyDeleteEli Fennell That's the impression I've gotten also...I just hate FB so much there are no words. That's a huge part of why I came back to G+ last spring. Twitter is the only other app I use. I'd love a new Google alternative, if I can be a part of communities like I've found here.
ReplyDeletewara zashi It's super tough to argue with the logic of your post there. You make some excellent points.
ReplyDeleteI learned my lesson. I’m not going to be bit from the same hole twice.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes you think they're going trying again? Building a new brand, a new community, that's tough! They don't know what to do, otherwise they'd have done it with G+ already!
ReplyDeleteMatthias Welwarsky Because G+ is their 4th attempt at such a thing. If they didn't quit after Google Buzz, I would think it's at least a possibility they'd consider another go. They'd know they won't be creating a mythical FB Killer like the billing this platform received, so they could adjust accordingly.
ReplyDeleteG.H. Brothers I don't follow. If this is their 4th go already then I truly think they've gotten the message by now. Also, G+ wasn't after Buzz, it came after Buzz in the sense that Buzz was killed in order to focus on G+. "Plus killed Buzz", so to speak. Today, there's nothing to come after Plus.
ReplyDeleteYou're both wrong. Google isn't done with social, as I already said they're baking social sharing right into all their apps!
ReplyDeleteBut, I basically guarantee they won't do another 'Facebook Killer'. They won't want to risk another head-on attack, not even at Twitter.
That's OK. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are not the Apex of Social. The market will continue to evolve, and there will be plenty of opportunities for a smart company to find social niches.
I agree, they will of course do social, but that's vastly different from a social network. That they're done with. They don't see enough value in it as far as the data goes when there's so many better ways to collect it without the hassle of running a competitive network.
