10 Best Alternatives to Facebook: This article fails to mention that MeWe charges monthly fees for storage...
10 Best Alternatives to Facebook: This article fails to mention that MeWe charges monthly fees for storage exceeding 8 gigs and there's also a fee-based chat. Click the Cloud icon at the top of your MeWe page to see the monthly fees. If you post a lot of images and gifs, you might hit the 8 gigs limit over time.
I was told by Martina Neumayer that to avoid those limits just use some external storage which allows you direct linking to other services. For example, Mega has something like that. Static images will display through links on MeWe. They will have a preview in the post. If someone wants to have full resolution, then they need to click on it and will be redirected to the source image.
A bit different is with the animations (anim gifs). Some of them are displayed, some only with previews and need to click to play, and some will be as links. I think this depends directly on the gif file. MeWe is a markdown-based page, that means you can use all markdown language tags, options, codes etc. The embedding one too.

Yeap.. To avoid those limits just use some external storage which allows you direct linking to other services. For example Mega have something like that.
ReplyDeleteMartina Neumayer Does the direct link to external storage display the actual image or gif when posted on MeWe?
ReplyDeleteKathie Gifford Static images yes, they will have a preview in the post. If someone want to have full resolution then need to click on it and will be redirected to the source image.

But.. There is a workaround for this. MeWe is a markdown based page, that means you can use all markdown language tags, options, codes etc. The embedding one too ;)
And the best part is that you can reuse once posted image/file for posting somewhere else on the portal, without doubling the quote limits usage.
Martina Neumayer Thank you Martina for the great information.
ReplyDeleteKathie Gifford You're welcome 😊
ReplyDeleteopenbook.social - Openbook | A social network for a better tomorrow.
ReplyDeletePer Siden Do you have any experience with openbook, in the beta? Or know anyone who does? Hard to find any details about it.
ReplyDeleteBill Brayman nope, signed up and pitched in for the sake of it. Worth keeping an eye on.
ReplyDeleteKathie Gifford Please respond to PM, ICYMI.
ReplyDeleteEdward Morbius Maybe I'm being dense, but I don't see anyone on this thread that I can identify as PM. Can you be more specific who PM is?
ReplyDeleteKathie Gifford PM: personal message. I'd mentioned you on another post.
ReplyDeleteSearching for a social platform similar to Google Plus - Didn't really like MeWe - Any Ideas....?
ReplyDeleteDheeraj Mahant Read through the article, and the archive, and stay tuned. That's what most of us are looking for.
ReplyDeleteEdward Morbius Can you give me the url for the post or tell me here what you want to discuss? There's a lot of posts on the site.
ReplyDeleteEdward Morbius
ReplyDeleteOk....Thanks.....
Signed up for Openbook.. 1700+ on the wait list xD lol hahaha

ReplyDeleteDheeraj Mahant I am on Minds. Here's my Minds navigation sample. As on Google+, you can block content you don't like. You can create groups but no collections. I have been using unique hashtags on each post to create my own collections I can retrieve just by searching on my custom hashtag. Each post can have up to 5 hashtags. I really like using hashtags because I can search on content. If I want to see all gifs, I search on gif and the results are the actual posts...not the names of the posters.
ReplyDeleteOthers may recommend MeWe. I tried several sites including Pluspora and MeWe. Pluspora has a size limit on images and gifs posted. Many of my gifs were rejected during posting. That just frustrated me. Pluspora's UI didn't remind me of Google+ either.
Some group admins tell their members to move to MeWe but don't mention this: MeWe charges a monthly fee to each individual user for storage over 8 gigs....that's not text you post but images and gifs. You can reduce your image and gif size by only posting links to them but people rarely click on links. I was told by Martina Neumayer that to avoid those limits just use some external storage which allows you direct linking to other services. For example Mega has something like that. Static images will display through links on MeWe. They will have a preview in the post. If someone wants to have full resolution then they need to click on it and will be redirected to the source image.

I post mostly images and gifs. So that is not good for me. I'd reach the 8 gig limit quickly. I also want my images and gifs to display without clicking on them. What if MeWe raises its fees in the future when I've already created a presence there? I'd be locked into MeWe like imposed brand loyalty. Also encrypted chat on MeWe is not free after your free trial. MeWe's user experience is similar to Facebook. I want a Google+ experience. MINDS is the closest I have found to a Google+ experience. Any content I don't like, I just block.
One more thing, the Minds newsfeed (like Google+ Home) is populated by posts from those you subscribe to. When I first started on Minds, the Newsfeed was a bust for me because I didn't understand that. I now have over 500 followers and my Newsfeed is much better. Also, I have restricted my Newsfeed to certain hashtags and that filters the Newsfeed too.
Minds doesn't require your real name to create an account either.

Dheeraj Mahant I don't know what your level of computing expertise is. The computing gurus seem to like federated systems (Pluspora, etc) where they CAN set up there own server (pod) and have control or piggyback on someone else's pod. They also like open platforms that communicate with other platforms.
ReplyDeleteI want to have fun and not be a network or systems manager. In a Google+ alternative, I just want to be able to post, have those posts display and communicate as much as possible like I did on Google+. minds.com - Minds gave me that. MeWe would require me to set up links in my posts to avoid the 8gig storage limit after which I would have to buy extra storage on a monthly basis. I don't want to be locked into a platform that could charge escalating fees in the future because I am too lazy to migrate and start over on another platform.
I have found this migration difficult because it's like buying a car...a long term commitment. It takes a lot of effort to establish a presence on a new platform...no one knows you are there...essentially you are creating a new social community for yourself.
I am still posting on Google+ obviously and will until the bitter end. I am hoping someone will buy the rights to Google+, rename it and return it to us. I jokingly call it the Twinkie (snack cake) Save. Twinkies almost went extinct too.
Each of us has to assess our wish list, our level of expertise to operate on a platform and find a platform that best meets that wish list.
Edward Morbius Answered! Thank you for following up.
ReplyDeleteKathie Gifford Likewise.
ReplyDeleteIt is odd that they don’t even mention the censorship issue and that’s the hardest one to deal with. Facebook and Twitter are known to censor conservative views, sometimes even labeling them as too dangerous for America! It seems that getting a platform that doesn’t allow porn but allows free speech is hard to come by.
ReplyDeleteBecause they both at the same time is literally impossible to have. Or is censorship or the freedom of speech. Simple.
ReplyDeleteBtw.. On Facebook you can now get banned for just a talk with friends on messenger about sex. Due to their latest tos changes. So is it now.
The double-kill argumentation is like a shotgun.
ReplyDeleteGood pointed makes a nice hole directly between the eyes.

Mike Kennedy Martina Neumayer Not everyone wants a free speech site. They want a site that parrots speech they agree with...that's why there on sites that censor. They can complain and know their complaints will result in other people being censored. I'm not one of those people. I want to be exposed to all forms of thought. Some people have analysis that is outstanding and a completely mind expanding experience. I have the ability to ignore speech that doesn't add value to my life and focus on the features of a site...the user experience.
ReplyDeleteI've been on Minds for 2.5 months now....nearly daily. Minds has the porn problem licked and fully supports free speech! The porn is there but you can't see it unless you click on it. The porn posts are opaque.
Minds has no political agenda. It was created to protect free speech and has issued a Minds Bill of Rights to protect free speech from interference:
Minds is officially adopting the Manila Principles On Intermediary Liability, a digital bill of rights, outlined by the Electronic Frontier Foundation and other leading digital rights organizations. The principles have been endorsed by nearly 300 leading press freedom and technology policy organizations and individuals. They act as a guideline for protecting freedom of expression and create an open environment for innovation. It is our hope to create a network effect of companies and organizations adopting the principles to further Internet freedom globally.
The Manila Principles On Intermediary Liability
1. Intermediaries should be shielded from liability for third-party content.
2. Content must NOT be required to be removed without an order by a judicial authority.
3. Requests for restrictions of content must be clear, be unambiguous, and follow due process.
4. Laws and content restriction orders and practices must comply with the tests of necessity and proportionality.
5. Laws and content restriction policies and practices must respect due process.
6. Transparency and accountability must be built into laws and content restriction policies and practices.
Please visit manilaprinciples.org for more information on each principle.
Please review this site for further details on the principles listed above: https://www.manilaprinciples.org/

ReplyDeleteHellooo my dear friend Kathie Gifford - First things first - Thank you so much for taking your precious time out , and for the effort to help me out in this alternative to G+ question.😊
To begin with , you had asked me about my computing expertise - Thats an easy one to answer - Its Zero - hahaha - All I can do is open up my computer , come on G+ , post something , say hello to friends and generally have a nice time over here , make someone happy , and its ta-ta for me - That about sums it up about me I guess.😊
Not a great fan of social media - Hate Facebook - Stumbled upon Google plus accidently around three years back - Just loved it - Simply loved being here - The layout , the ease of everything , the way everything worked....wow....lets just say I loved it.😊
Coming back to our problem , Now where do I go - I did try MeWe..or...PeeWee something [ what a funny name ]....or whatever....hahaha - Didn't like it - It felt like eating stale , leftover food , after a Princely delicious meal....hahaha.😊
Went over to Minds recently - Couldnt create an account - Some password problem - Not able to generate the right password for signing up - Some upper characters , lower characters , technical stuff , which is beyond me - If you can help me in that , I would be grateful - I would love to try out Minds
- Just a feeling and an instinct that this would work out for all of us - Sounds like something similar to Google Plus.😊
Mu apologies for the delay in responding - Best wishes for a Super Saturday and a Wonderful Weekend My Dear Friend Kathie Gifford - And a Big Thanks for everything - Cheers.....🎶😊🎶
Kathie Gifford You know.
ReplyDeleteFor me such a thing like freedom (not only the speech but in the whole meaning) is important. Freedom of speech is one of the basic priorities of the human rights. If someone try to take away it from you, or any other people it means that they will also take away any other rights too. There is only a matter of time. One step leads the next steps. Like a domino stones. It is simple, at least for me. Or someone respects me and my basic rights, or can turn away and go. Like old maxim says "my way or highway". ;)
Kathie Gifford NB: claiming no political agenda is not the same as (or necessarily conducive to) having no political skew. MeWe is a strong case in point, as I've documented elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteEnough so to make one wonder if the results are deliberately induced.
On Minds: what do you know of the history of Howard Rheingold with the site, and/or his present involvement, if any?
As I understand MEWE sucks in general... But its hard to keep a social media up among all the options so somehow it justifies the money they charging from its users.
ReplyDeleteNo, for me does not suxx at all.
ReplyDeleteMartina Neumayer I'm sure...
ReplyDeleteKerem Go & Martina Neumayer: Keep it productive, please.
ReplyDeleteEdward Morbius Martina Neumayer You too just earned a block from me. I'm taking anyone's shit... Not anymore :-)
ReplyDeleteI am using MeWe for a small group that I followed on G+. It is working fine. I considering having a pay page @$3 a month it might be worth it.
