Was reading about this when your Breaking News notification popped up, Andrew Hatchett. Bad news travels fast, though honestly, from a consumer's POV, a quicker departure might be to our benefit. There's nothing like a deadline to focus one's mind, right?
ReplyDeleteI'm still looking for that "right" place to migrate to. You'd think someone would have come up with on by now. :-)
MeWe doesn't quite seem to cut it. :-(
I find this really unprofessional and unacceptable behavior on Google's part.
ReplyDeleteI know that I don't have any formal contract guaranteeing any SLAs or sunsetting periods. But an equally vague and short "within 90 days" to shut down the API (I still have to export some stuff that Takeout doesn't include, and write an exporter for that) is really infuriating. Also cutting the overall sunsetting more or less in half is a complete no-go.
Carsten Reckord You make some good points.

ReplyDeleteRight now, at least for me, it looks like MeWe or Blogger may be it - not a lot of time to do a lot of testing of other platforms that people may be familiar with.
The time has cut in half. After another data leak happens, they're either gonna close it down in February, or close it immediately.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads-up but 💩.
ReplyDeleteCarsten Reckord not to mention the rate-limiting you'll very likely run into, thus the need for being able to spread your calls out over multiple days/weeks, possibly even months...
ReplyDeleteAndrew Hatchett I thought we were looking for an interactive site. Blogger is just individual blogs.
ReplyDeleteStuart O'Neill
ReplyDeleteIf set properly Blogger can be 'interactive' to a large degree.
If you allow Authors on your blog then they can initiate posts rather than just comment and reply. A Blog can have 100 authors and thus could serve most smaller communities while larger ones can use MeWe.
Blogger can be viewed by anyone, commented on by members of the Blog, and have 100 different people that can initiate posts themselves.
Nothing is ever really going to replace the G+ Communities. All we can do is try to replicate them as best we can with what is available.
I'm the rare member of Google that didn't participate actively in many communities. I'm more enjoyed using my following and followers in my stream to be able to pick and choose whose content on many different subjects I would follow or I would read properly. I don't know how to replace that constant stream of information photographs YouTube's I don't know how to replace that or if I can. Any comment you seem well-informed?
