After some initial skepticism, I finally tried this tool - and - I am sold.

This tool can export in a well documented JSON format, as well as in WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR=XML). It can grab your profile posts, pages, collections, and communities, both posts and comments.

If you have a WordPress site, you can directly import all your G+ posts from the latter. Note that the export tool does not download the images, but the WP importer can do that for you.

The following appears to not be included
- +1's
but those are hardly relevant after you migrate content.

So - if you want to grab your G+ content, don't waste your time on Google Takeout, as that is a total mess. This is hands down the best G+ export tool I've tried so far.

  1. I've tried 3 versions (1.0.8, 1.0.9 and the latest 1.1.0) but all of them failed every single time. Both me and the dev don't know what went wrong.

  2. DO ИOꓕ DꓵbΓICⱯꓕE It works perfectly for me. How did your attempts fail? Are you behind a proxy?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Lars Fosdal No proxy here, direct connection. I don't have the fastest internet but at 20-30MBps (the fastest connection I can get in the neighborhood) it is pretty fast for most of the things I do on the net. The tool did attempt to fetch the feeds, I could see the progress but it stops in less than a minute.

  4. DO ИOꓕ DꓵbΓICⱯꓕE For me, It slowed down a quite a bit at the end - and it took about 30-40 mins to get the 30K+ posts.

  5. Lars Fosdal is right, it takes longer to Google+ service to deliver older posts. They are most likely stored on a storage with a bigger latency.

  6. Friends+Me I think it's not about what is "right" or "wrong" here. The fact is it didn't work for me. I would not mind waiting for hours but it the app won't even last a minute in my case.

  7. DO ИOꓕ DꓵbΓICⱯꓕE what were you trying to export? Your personal feed or some G+ community or just a collection? What's your Google account default language?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Friends+Me At this point I only want to retrieve my personal feed. My default language is always English (US).

Now, this is just a suggestion but can you make a special experimental version that only retrieve 300 posts to see if it will work with much smaller number? Or maybe implement a setting where a user can set how many posts they want to export?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Friends+Me Or ensure that any situation that prevents retrieval, is properly surfaced in the UI?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Lars Fosdal we’re working on it. The app is getting better with every new release.

  11. Friends+Me Does purchase include upgrades?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Edward Morbius yes, the license is for one computer and can be used in current and all future versions of the application.

  13. I would like to migrate my posts to WP and I probably have more than 3000 posts, but I don't care so much about the posts I have created 5 to 6 years back, can I control that the exporter does pick my latest posts first?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Christine Bichler it is not possible to control what will be downloaded and what not. We do not plan on implementing such a feature in the future.

  15. Friends+Me thanks for the info, will try it though after I have done the Google takeout, will see what works best...and I always can delete my early content

  16. Friends+Me Thank you, but I'm getting an constant "An unexpected error has occurred." on my end. I'm on a mac, OS Sierra. Exporter version 1.4.o

  17. What are the concerns with providing full Google account access to a third party tool?

I'd had the thought that you might change your password (in case you're using it elsewhere), run the exporter, than change it again.

  18. I haven't made web pages since the days it was all easily done in notepad.
What's the easiest way to get to word press site going?

Also, didn't I read somewhere that wordpress is the devil?

  19. Tom Hart there's a new Google+ Exporter release 1.4.1 fixing the app crashing for users with an empty database.

  20. I will probably use this tool , but I wonder what will be the post structure for Wordpress. For instance, there's no Title in G+. What will be the titles of the WP Post ?

Is there somewhere an exemple of a WP Blog that displays how the Export in WP could look like ?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Nicolas Quentin we use first line of the G+ post for the title.

Here you can see an example of export of our G+ page to WP googleplusexporter.home.blog - Google+ Exporter

  22. Friends+Me Thanks, this seems to be working! Sending you the fee now, thanks. Does the fee work if I have a couple different G+ profiles?

    THANKS FOR THIS!

  23. Tom Hart the license is for one computer and all future versions of the app including the current one ;-)

  24. Friends+Me Sorry to keep asking questions.

    A couple quick questions:

    1. I "OWN" a few communities. Will it import the whole community? Or just my own posts, etc?
    2. It doesn't seem to import ALL the comments. I haven't been able to figure out which comments it pulls and which it doesn't.

If these are answered your page, please direct me there, thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Tom Hart the app can export entire G+ community you are an owner of.

Looks like we're having a problem downloading comments for posts with just a few comments. Work in progress.
