Maybe I should give up the attempts to takeout/export my G+ data.

Maybe I should give up the attempts to takeout/export my G+ data. My first takeout request just completed recently but I was given less than a week to download 478.96 GB of data (both G+ Stream and Communities data). With internet speed of only around 20 - 30 MBps there's no way I could download that in a week, unless I let my PC and internet running all day, and cry at the electricity bill at the end of the month.

My second attempt of only selecting G+ Stream produced 'only' 193.03 GB of data, but even that was reported as "archive incomplete". I hope I will have better luck with my third attempt by only selecting Posts from the Stream (unselected Activity Log, Collection Metadata and Events). Seeing how big the size of the data I can conclude that I really used G+ a lot, maybe beyond what most other people consider 'normal'.

I've tried the Google+ Exporter tool but even with the latest version 1.1.0 it fails every single time.

  1. If I had this problem, I would have gotten a cloud VM (Amazon and Google have free tier ones, or at least cheap) I did a takeout into such a VM. And then used used some tool designed for downloading such massive data amounts to get the result on a local machine.

  2. Dima Pasechnik If there's a specific tutorial on how to get this done on a cloud VM I'd like to consider it. Cloud VM seems too technical for me so a tutorial would be helpful.

  3. This concerns me. I haven't tried it yet but I've been on here since beta and have been on here more than I would consider healthy. I'm sure trying to extract my account is going to be a test in patience! Dima Pasechnik thanks for the suggestion of cloud VM. I will most likely have to look into this.

  4. another option would be to get Google’s G-suite account. They say the don’t shut it down for business customers, and so you can keep using it for about 5$ a month.

  5. Dima Pasechnik AFAIK getting a G-Suite account won't transform the consumer version of G+ into the business version.

  6. Considering all the people I interact with here will most likely be gone the only real benefit to that is paying to keep the archive. Do they seamlessly transition a consumer account to a business account?

  7. Shar Banning I have no first hand info on that but with the way Google been handling all this stuff I think it's safe to assume that is not going to happen.

  8. I just requested an archive. I'm curious as to how much it will be, but I suspect more than I'm expecting. I haven't been on here since Beta, but I started very soon after.

  9. It looks as though your posts are very image heavy. In which case don't you have backups offline of the images? So what is it that you want to download and archive?

This may be a FAQ, feedback request about Takeout. Perhaps Google should provide a Takeout (of Posts especially) that is ext only and doesn't include the media files.

  10. Julian Bond In my first attempt I wanted to archive everything which lead to almost 500 GB of data. I excluded Communities data in the second attempt and managed to get around half of that, but with incomplete archive. I don't remember if I excluded photos from my third attempt though but if the archived data is less than 100 GB then it should be manageable. I don't need to redownload photos because I think all photos uploaded to my stream are already in GPhotos.

Anyway I wouldn't have to deal with this takeout if the G+ Exporter app works (too bad it didn't). I don't mind if I could export only the latest 3000 posts as allowed by the free version of the app but sadly that is not possible.

  11. Hundreds of GB definitely sounds image-heavy. I've been an active user since open beta, and my G+ Takeout yesterday was only 545 MB.

  12. Shar Banning There is currently no way to convert a consumer Google+ account into a G Suite account nor a way to transfer content from a consumer Google+ profile to a profile owned by a G Suite account. Even if that were possible, the best information we have at this time is that even users whose profiles are associated with G Suite accounts will only be able to interact with other users within the same G Suite domain, and that communities other than those created by G Suite accounts and that are restricted to the associated G Suite domain would not be supported. Even if a means of converting a consumer account to a G Suite account were to be provided, it would be far from a seamless transition because the G Suite Google+ experience would be far different from what consumers have today.

  14. The ideal was LJ to DreamWidth as you went to DW, hit some buttons, and then DW did the import for you :P

  15. DO ИOꓕ DꓵbΓICⱯꓕE I just created an Archive and my Google+ Stream was 37GB, and I thought was a lot!

I suggest creating individual archives not just for each category in Takeout, but for each component in the Google+ Stream (Posts, Photos, Events, Collection Metadata).

Those will be smaller. But if you share a lot of photos, it's going to be a lot of days, no matter what. If you shared Google+ Photo Albums back before 2015, it will include all the images in those albums, for example.

You can choose the Delivery Method of having the archives sent to Drive, DropBox, OneDrive or Box. You would have to pay for storage to include all your archives, but that would be easier than downloading.

  16. Shar Banning The only thing you can easily import from a free consumer account into G Suite is Mail, Contacts, and calendar events (support.google.com - Simple imports for smaller organizations - G Suite Admin Help). That works great. There are third party tools to enable transferring Google Drive files (I have used the free version of multcloud). You can transfer Google Photos directly (https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-move-photos-between-2-Google-Photos-accounts).

But there is no way to transfer G+ content.

  17. DO ИOꓕ DꓵbΓICⱯꓕE Please file a Feedback report on this. Takeout residency is a major issue of concern.

  18. Peggy K If you read again my post you'll see I did select only my posts in my second attempt hoping I'd get a smaller archive but still came up with almost 200GB anyway, with an error. Also saving to cloud is not an option right now because I have no cloud subscription that could cater hundreds of GBs of data.

  19. DO ИOꓕ DꓵbΓICⱯꓕE how do you access your G+ photos using Google Photos ?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Younes Layachi I don't. It's just that in the past few years I have more or less stopped uploading photos and only shared links instead. That means 99% of my G+ photos are already inside Google Photos before Google unbundled Photos from Plus.

    ReplyDelete
  21. DO ИOꓕ DꓵbΓICⱯꓕE yes, your Posts archive includes all the photos and images you shared in posts (with a thumbnail and the full image for each).

Personally I'd love to be able to archive by time periods, but that isn't currently an option (and I've sent feedback to G+ about that).

  22. If this helps, go for it. I was able to export a couple of my collections and I successfully imported one of them into my WordPress blog using this tool (the free version will let you export up to 3000 posts)

plus.google.com - Export your Google+ feeds to Blogger. Yes, it's true, support for Blogger is...

  23. Bobbi Jo Woods I mentioned that tool at the bottom of my post.

  24. It was updated recently, to version 1.2.0

Also, my comment was not just for you, but for the benefit of anyone else reading, since it was clear many comments were referring to Google Takeout, which is a bad product.

  25. Bobbi Jo Woods Just so you know I've been in contact with the dev for a couple of weeks to report the issues and followed the app up until the true latest version which is 1.4.1 (as of yesterday at least). Some versions were made in response to my reported issues. And since this is my thread I assumed all comments here were directed to me. And since I already mentioned the app in my post there is no need for other people to mention it again in the comments.
