My S.O. and I need a way lift our profiles and all posts onto flash drives. Don't trust google anymore. How do we do it?
Mind you, he's been here since the very begining, so there's a shit ton on his. Not so much on mine. But still, too many memories to lose.
Any help appreciated.

ReplyDeleteYou can get a raw data dump from Google Takeout. The bigger question is what you would want to do with this data?
ReplyDeleteBernhard Suter I don' really know right now. But I was scrolling through for something this morning and realized that there are so many good memories, lots of good memes, pictures of friends who aren't among the living anymore... things I can't replace.
ReplyDeleteAs I understand the takeout data, it'll only export your stuff, so not entire posts with everyones comments, images and +1s. Please correct me if I'm wrong (I should probably have a look at my takeout testrun). If true, an export will likely not be too useful, as you loose context. A scraper, of sort, might very well be a far better option, but I'm not really aware of any at this moment.
ReplyDeleteEdit: Apparently takeout does export entire posts, all included.
Mads Jensen thanks...please update me if you find something that may help?
ReplyDeletePost exports (at least until very recently) do include "plusOnes" and comments by other users
ReplyDeleteOkay...that's good to know.
ReplyDeleteNo comment stream Mads Jensen ? Fuck( no offense and very seldom used). Most of my interaction was in comment streams of real substance.
ReplyDeleteOne partial thing you can do easily, at least with the safari browser, is to save an archive copy of your g+ pages. It will literally save all to your local drive, except the collapsed text and comments. You might be able to scroll through the page and expand everything, then it would save it all. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this.
ReplyDeleteGee Stuart O'Neill , thanks. Sorry I didn't post anything of "real substance."
ReplyDeleteSorry I was just upset and looking for some help.
Bill Brayman thank you.
ReplyDeleteI'm not the tech person in my family, bu I'll have my partner check into that. I appreciate the help.
Google Takeout does include comments and plusses on your posts.
ReplyDeleteMads Jensen , could I persuade you to edit your comment with strikeout so nobody else panics over your incorrect assumption? Thanks!
Sallie Alys Montuori Comment edited.
ReplyDeleteHow about ones own comments on someone elses post? Will they also export the original post?
Heather Hult I'm am as upset and non-tech as it gets. Hope I somehow communicated to all and you. I get it.
ReplyDeleteStuart O'Neill it's all good. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteFor everyone, have we found the place to take the results of Google takeout? I wonder about even using Drive in the beginning just to have Repository. If nothing else does that seem reasonable? Once I decide to experiment with a community in totality I could then export from drive to the new place. Or I could be completely crazy. As I've said I'm a true non-techie.
ReplyDeleteStuart O'Neill no answers yet. :(
ReplyDeleteMads Jensen Thank you!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, Takeout only gives you the comments associated with your own posts. Comments left on other people's posts aren't pulled for you.
The other massive lack is that as soon as anyone deletes their account, all of their comments on your posts are gone, so the sooner you start taking out, the better. Lots and lots of people are leaving G+ already, and sadly, deleting their accounts when they go.
Stuart O'Neill If you don't have and can't get hard drive (or flash drive) space enough for your Takeout, you might as well use Drive until you have a home. Google already has all your G+ data, so it's not as though you're giving them anything new.
ReplyDeleteWhether or not you upload and post a lot of images will be the deciding factor for Takeout size. I've been an active G+ user since open beta, but I don't do a lot of pictures, so I haven't even hit 500 MB yet. However, photographers who upload directly to G+ (rather than linking from GPhotos or other services) will run to many gigabytes.
Don't forget that you're only exporting your G+ related content. Gmail, GPhotos, and other products aren't going anywhere (yet, anyway). So hit the "select none" button, and then scroll down and turn on Google+ Circles, Google+ Communities, Google+ Stream, and Profile. The default formats are ok if you just want to be able to see your stuff easily, but if you also make a Takeout selecting JSON format for each of those, you're more likely to find eventually that someone has designed an import tool that suits your needs.
As far as having "found the place to take the results of Google takeout", that's going to be up to each person's (or community's) preferences. There's never going to be just one platform that suits everybody.
Sallie Alys Montuori - that's not a lack, it's the law now - at least for anybody somewhat affected by the new European GDPR regulation: gdpr-info.eu - Art. 17 GDPR – Right to erasure (‘right to be forgotten’) | General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
ReplyDeleteBernhard Suter Point taken.
ReplyDeleteNot very many photos so most likely a small takedown. We'll see how it goes I've got other irons in the fire to heat up right now. Sure appreciate the help and when I get around to doing it may contact you. Thanks
