TIL: Google Sites
https://sites.google.com is a website builder (compare to Wix or Squarespace), originally JotSpot, operated by Google since 2008.
Came up in a Diaspora discussion:

I'd been completely unaware of it until yesterday.

Been on it for years even before G+ was born but I can't really see it being used as social media.

ReplyDeleteDO ИOꓕ DꓵbΓICⱯꓕE Thanks. Mostly mentioning it as a a curiosity, not recommending it.
ReplyDeleteFilip H.F. Slagter Mobile is a consumption channel, clearly.
ReplyDeleteThey will discontinue the service next thursday anyway ... ;)
ReplyDeleteI used it a bit years ago. Mediocre.
ReplyDeleteBare bones minimum. If you don't have some experience creating web sites, you may be at a lost. Those with little artistic talent will have a hard time.
ReplyDeletePublic comment on sites is not allowed unless you are a member of that GSuite domain (@gmail.com doesn't qualify).
ReplyDeleteI turned up more info elsewhere: this is a paid ($5/mo IIRC) G Suite product.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a prime service to be sunset during their annual cleanup.
ReplyDeleteGoogle Sites has been around for over 15 years. Why should they sunset it now? For that matter, they have have forgotten it.
ReplyDeleteShawn H Corey
ReplyDeleteDepends on which Google Sites you are talking about.... the Classic one or the New Google Sites.
Classic sites is actually far better than "new" sites, and I'm cringing that they won't make news sites as good before deprecating Classic.
ReplyDeleteLi Gardner
ReplyDeleteOne nice thing about Classic is that they've promised to give 1 year notice before they close them and everyone has to use the New Sites :)
Andrew Hatchett like the 9 months notice we got? 😂
ReplyDeleteFilip H.F. Slagter
ReplyDeletePerhaps, as we all know, changes happen unexpectedly due to circumstances. The thing about the 1 year notice is that it was made very early on and they have constantly been improving the new Sites platform which would indicate no immediate/mid-term plans for not completing it.
This article was May 2017, and I'm still waiting for what they promised new sites would do.
ReplyDeletegsuiteupdates.googleblog.com - An update on the classic Google Sites deprecation timeline
One of the advantages of Sites is that you can limit access to specific individuals or Google Groups (which you can use for email lists.). That's similar to sharing in Google Drive.
ReplyDeleteI think of it more as a way to create a private site than a public one. And I think the options are geared toward internal sites for organizations. Like Google+, Sites is a G Suite core service.
Li Gardner
ReplyDeleteSince they haven't finished building out the new sites, I can't fault them for what they can't do yet. Granted, I wish the progress was paced a bit faster but they are still making progress. Exactly what features they promised are you waiting for?
