We are obviously NOT all going to the same place.
Maybe we should be thinking in terms of a universal label or hashtag(s) by which to find and recognize expat plussers after April.

We could put little orange (G+) circles on our profile pictures I suppose. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt seems there are two or three top sites people are considering in large numbers. I'm not weighing in on that because as the owner of the community I don't feel it would be appropriate.
ReplyDeleteHave a look around, people are certainly talking about what they like and we encourage first-hand accounts. We do, however, discourage simply "Don't join X" or "I like Y" kinds of statements because they really don't help anyone decide... they just make the commenter feel better.
Me present there
ReplyDeleteIs your presence there John Lewis Adam Auster Brian Fields , please ?
Better the list in alphabetical ?
Ifinder Ifindi I have no control over the output... and I'm expecting to eventually put it into a database so it can be searched and sorted.
ReplyDeleteAlways Thanks for the Initiators, so Awe John Lewis
ReplyDeleteJohn Lewis I can see why you wouldn't want to weigh in on that, but can you make it easier for people to find some sort of summary of top choices? I don't have time to carefully examine the 34 listed alternatives, especially with the new accelerated timeline, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
ReplyDeleteIdeally, in a perfect world, someone would run statistics on all the alternative platforms listed in G+ about or pinned posts, and listed in the migration directory, and there would be a place to view those.
Assuming no one volunteers to accomplish that, a more realistic goal might be some sort of poll or voting about top candidates, or which site early migraters have already moved to.
Kevin C.
ReplyDeletePreviously we used to get it at CircleCount
Is it correct ?
Kevin C. It's a good idea. I've avoided creating a poll of this sort because it's limited to a set number of results on G+. That means I, as the owner and post of the poll, am making a decision based on what I see as the top viable options.
ReplyDeleteIf I could put 34 options in a poll, I would. Perhaps I'll make a poll on a third party site and post it.
If you are looking for guidance, you'll find no end of suggestions here. Create a new post, state your most important preferences (Ease of use? Non-corporate ownership? Privacy? Open sourced? etc...) and people will chime in. You'll have more information than you know what do to with.
Many people will NOT choose Facebook as their go to site. This is understandable for a few reasons.
ReplyDeleteI, personally, am choosing Facebook to set up shop for communities.
I understand simply creating a profile like I have here remedies any privacy issues. Plus, there are no ads in groups where I will spend the majority of my time.
I will also keep a profile open on MeWe as plenty of friends have chosen it. As well, I created a profile for reddit and Quora.
For the most part, most of my social media experience is community based and discussion oriented.
I hold out hope for Openbook as I like their ingenuity and understand how they can scale. Sadly, they aren't getting the Beta up and running until early next year, thus largely miss out with the migration.
There's a host of other options, Pluspora, Mastodon, Friendica Minds etc, yet along with MeWe, I don't see them growing to any large extent after the migration is complete.
To specifically answer the OP:
We set up a community on Facebook as many have a profile there. It doesn't matter where you finally decide to go, it provides a stable and permanent place to keep in touch and continue talking about social media, even after the migration is complete.
All G+ refugees are welcome.
Google Plus Meetup
Created as a place to connect, share, ask questions, discuss, learn, and eventually catalogue important social media information...such as where coms will end up, what's happening in the social media space, what social site members migrate to etc.
It was created on Facebook to ensure the longevity of the group. It will continue to exist Indefinitely to discuss social media in general and get constant feedback on the various sites and offerings through time.
We highly suggest even when the G+ migration is complete, members continue to visit the community as an all in one gathering place and information center.

al m views on Facebook are thier own and are not affiliated with this community.
ReplyDeleteI want to make it perfectly clear that while I support people finding places to connect once Google+ closes down, we have not advocating any particular location (for example Facebook) as a choice for doing that.
There are myriad considerations when picking a site to join, however exercise extreme caution when choosing one.
al m is a member of this community but is not a mod or owner and their views are their own and do NOT reflect the community as a whole.
Their suggestions are singular and not necessarily supported by the owner, mods, and members of this community. When they say "We set up a community on Facebook" they are NOT talking about this community.
John Lewis We could agree on a community name and/or hashtag, on each platform.
ReplyDeleteLike "G+ Meetup", #GPlussers, where we could try to reshare info coming from here.
There are currently several, on each platform, small and totally uncoordinated.
Christian Nalletamby There's over 30 alternatives currently in the spreadsheet for comparison.
ReplyDeleteI agree, making a hashtag would be helpful. I'll look into it. Let's start a new thread to do this.
John Lewis Heh...no, of course I'm not attempting to tie myself to this community outside of being a member only.
ReplyDeleteMy stating "we" fully means myself and others who run the Meetup.
I appreciate all the hard work John, Edward Morbius, and others, do for us here.
Their organizing this space and providing us a platform to discuss, along with creating other helpful things like the #plexodus wiki has been very helpful indeed.
Simply by reading the threads, asking questions, and partaking in discussion, G+ Mass Migration have educated and saved me countless hours of research.
Thanks :)
al m I didn't think you were intentionally trying to usurp the community by saying "we", but I needed readers to understand when you said it, that you meant another group of people who are working simultaneously.
ReplyDeleteJohn Lewis Of course.
ReplyDeleteEllo.co in this category), but at least it's a good start.
ReplyDeleteThere are a small number of well-established, mostly proprietary, social networks. I've got considerable issues with most or all of them. I also strongly suspect many will find themselves moving to or using those systems, at least for the interim. There are a number I won't be using, but I accept that others may differ.
There are also a number of less-well-known options, some established, some still in development. I've hopes that some set of these will challenge the closed and proprietary world, though the time seems still not entirely ripe. I'm exploring that space though.
John Lewis On the Polls question:
ReplyDeleteGoogle Forms allows offering numerous options.
Breaking the question into types of services (Chat / messaging, Microblogging, Social, Blogging, Wiki, Media (image/video/audio), other), and then specific platforms, might be helpful.
Sorting out some of the "bones" factors (see above) is another element. The main problem is that bones often aren't visible, so it's harder to judge.
Where people's own communities and contacts go is probably the largest single deciding factor.
Actually: I'm going to post a question/response post: "What factors are you looking at in considering new options?"
I've also been planning one on data archives / reuse.
Edward Morbius Mind if I copy and paste your first comment in the Meetup?
ReplyDeleteIt's informative and helpful.
Not only are we not all going to one place. Many of us are going to multiple places and have done for years. We're already on Twitter, Mastodon, Facebook, Reddit, a personal blog, and so on and on. G+ was just one of many places we already frequented and liked so when it goes it will just drop off the list.
ReplyDeleteSo the question is two fold. How do you find the others. And how do you make yourself easy to find. It starts with making a list of all the places you frequent and then putting it somewhere that it can be found. But that's the easy bit that you have control over.
"How do you find the others?". Which is to say, how do I preserve my own social graph centered on me across all the platforms. Answers on a postcard! What we can say that's on topic is that Takeout.Circles and maybe even Contacts.Export are not sufficient to do this. And that we've been worrying at this FAQ since at least 2001.
al m Anything I post to this Community is for general public distribution.
ReplyDeletePlease do.
Is there an app for Minds yet?
ReplyDeleteNathan Woodford Yep. iPhone and Android.
ReplyDeleteJohn Lewis link to it please? I tried looking for it in play store, but couldn't find it.
