Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ

Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ

Q: When is Google+ shutting down?

A: April of 2019. Four months earlier than originally announced.

March 7, 2019 for Google+ APIs, including Google+ Sign-in and integrations for web & mobile apps.

Q: Where should I go?

A: There is no one answer! This community can help you chose where to go, but you decide what fits best. Where your personal contacts go matters most.

Major alternatives are listed here: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Established_G%2B_Exodus_Communities

Q How do I know where people are going?

A: Some have used this form: https://goo.gl/forms/EnkYfrY9HYKkr7iy2

The results are posted here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GYSUTGpmz-2trxhvNyEv_rnNF1GvEf4OW0Lct7KxEiY

Others are using #SignalFlare posts, and #googleplus and #gplusrefugee hashtags on their new sites.

Also check a user's About page or pinned posts on their streams for forwarding information. Create these yourself for others to find.

Q: Can I save my G+ content?

A: YES! Use the Friends+Me Google+ Exporter for best results: https://gplus-exporter.friendsplus.me

Other tools for archiving exist. Official Google Data Takeout can work but is problematic: https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout/custom/plus_pages,circles,stream,plus_one,profile,plus_communities

Q: I have more data migration questions/issues?

A: See the Data Migration page: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Data_Migration_Process_and_Considerations

Q: What should I be doing as a G+ Community owner / moderator?

A: Communicate and coordinate with your community:
https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Migrating_Google%2B_Communities

Q: Should I delete my Google+ account or Communities?

A: You could, but we don't suggest it. Doing so will remove all content you and others have made, making it much harder for others to save their work.

Q: Can I simply convert to a G Suite / Corporate Google+ account?

A: Short answer: No.

Q: What if I have more questions?

  1. A few quick notes:

G+ Notifications appear broken as of 29 Jan 2019. This is probably temporary. In the meantime, it'll be confusing. I have no information, though if I learn anything I'll share it. It may be related to API modifications scheduled for 28 Jan 2019, though again, there's no specific information. Google+ Help mods are saying this is a known issue and a fix is forthcoming.

There've been a few recent questions as to shut-down dates. This is expected, and in general not a problem.... except: Confusingly-worded queries may be removed as may incorrect responses. Examples include questions of the form "Will X be happening on date?" This creates an impression of X happening on date even where it isn't, and as the profile of G+MM continues to rise (we've crossed 4,000 members in the past week), minimising confusion is a core concern. Similarly, comments which get dates or facts wrong will be removed for similar reasons.

Our goal is to spread information, not confusion.

And, as noted above, present information is for a shutdown at some as-yet-unspecificed date in April 2019.

And to that end, a repost of the Short FAQ, with a link to the longer one. Both are in the G+MM sidebar as well from the Community landing page.

    Thanks.

  2. I access the google+ app version and my notifications are ok.

  3. On my laptop I prefer Mr Jingles. When that is glitchy I go to Notifications on the sidebar menu - which - always seems to work, but is more clicks.

  4. Commander Gustavo I stopped getting "+1s," "comments" [on], and "replies" [to] notifications, but regular posts and straight shares are still coming in. This entire shutdown is truly and utterly depressing.

  5. Note that this post has been obsoleted by Jan 30 2019 announcements from Google.

The shutdown is now scheduled for April 2, 2019.
