Published on July 1, 2008. Talks about Myspace, Bebo, Dopplr, Upcoming, Brightkite, Friendfeed. Even then the article was a bit late to the party because microformats, rel=me, XFN, FOAF, OpenID all appeared some years before.

Google used to be actively involved. TFA mentions "Google Social Graph"; long since gone.
In the process stumbled back across the small crew of UK developers who used to work on this stuff. Like Dave Singleton now enabling the gig economy and zero hour contracts for Deliveroo. Ugh!
