Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ

Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ

Q: When is Google+ shutting down?

A: April 2, 2019. Five months earlier than originally announced.

March 7, 2019 for Google+ APIs, including Google+ Sign-in and integrations for web & mobile apps.

Q: Where should I go?

A: There is no one answer! This community can help you chose where to go, but you decide what fits best. Where your personal contacts go matters most.

Major alternatives are listed here: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Established_G%2B_Exodus_Communities

Q How do I know where people are going?

A: Some have used this form: https://goo.gl/forms/EnkYfrY9HYKkr7iy2

The results are posted here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GYSUTGpmz-2trxhvNyEv_rnNF1GvEf4OW0Lct7KxEiY

Others are using #SignalFlare posts, and #googleplus and #gplusrefugee hashtags on their new sites.

Also check a user's About page or pinned posts on their streams for forwarding information. Create these yourself for others to find.

Q: Can I save my G+ content?

A: YES! Use the Friends+Me Google+ Exporter for best results: https://gplus-exporter.friendsplus.me

Other tools for archiving exist. Official Google Data Takeout can work but is problematic: https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout/custom/plus_pages,circles,stream,plus_one,profile,plus_communities

Q: I have more data migration questions/issues?

A: See the Data Migration page: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Data_Migration_Process_and_Considerations

Q: What should I be doing as a G+ Community owner / moderator?

A: Communicate and coordinate with your community:
https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Migrating_Google%2B_Communities

Q: Should I delete my Google+ account or Communities?

A: You could, but we don't suggest it. Doing so will remove all content you and others have made, making it much harder for others to save their work.

Q: Can I simply convert to a G Suite / Corporate Google+ account?

A: Short answer: No.

  1. If you're thinking "but dred just posted that yesterday", yeah, I did, but Google's finally made some more announcements.

Key is that the shutdown now has a date: April 2, 2019.

As I've posted elsewhere, this is very little time. 61 days remaining. If you're not well on your way to moving elsewhere, you're not going to have much choice or options in the time remaining.

  2. Now, how do I find out a list of all the sites where I used G+ to authenticate? :P

  3. I've been signed into G+ for so many years.. I'm not sure I remember my passwords.. and my list of passwords we're in my house.. which it and all it's contents are charred ash now.

  4. Maybe add:
February 2nd: Google+ Comments for Blogger
March 7th: Google+ Comments for all other sites.

  5. Andres Soolo if I understand the migration document (https://developers.google.com/identity/sign-in/web/quick-migration-guide) correctly, then users don't really need to do anything if they used Google+ Sign-In in the past. Once the sites have switched over from the Google+ Sign-In flow to the Google Sign-In, you should still be able to log in regardless. It will still provide the user's email address and openid address, which is likely all that's needed to match it to the sites' own user accounts.

  6. Filip H.F. Slagter Those are appropriate topics for the long FAQ, but not the short one.

  7. Filip H.F. Slagter Users don't have to do anything.

    Sites do.

Apparently, Google sent out notifications of some of this the day after the changes went into effect.

    Total communications fail.
