We just launched our BETA Google+ Data Importer which allows you to easily transfer your Google+ data into your LifeCloud and automatically restore your communities, posts, and collections.

After spending some time in this community we realize your sense of abandonment by Google, which seems to be compounded by the difficulty in recreating your communities elsewhere. It seems like a waste keeping all your archived data stored on some isolated computer.
We wanted to give you an easy way to continue where you left off. That's why we invested a lot of time building this tool so that you can quickly get your communities back up and running.
Please note that this is a BETA version; we've tested successfully but there may be some kinks. We'd like to work with some of you directly if you're having issues (especially with larger files and lots of posts).

ReplyDeleteOn brief inspection, note that membership (presumably free) is required.
Does this allow you to save a backup on your own computer? The way the front page is worded, it sounds more like a transfer, eg that the communities would now appear/work on LifeCloud forums instead.
Which could certainly be an option for some. Just trying to clarify what this is.

ReplyDeleteI think the "post captcha" challenge was a Friends+me importer issue but if it becomes an issue for you (or anyone) please let us know and we'll do something to program around it.
Cindy Brown By the way yes you need to be a member because when your communities/posts/collections are recreated on LifeCloud they have to be associated with your account.
ReplyDeleteTried it this afternoon Javan Joel . With the slow connection here in Benin, I finally could download my TakeOut ZIP file (< 970 MB) and send it to the importer... A few problems: doesn't convert HTML tags properly... doesn't import videos (links are there twice, that's all)... doesn't reaffect topics (although created).

Didier J. MARY Thanks Mary. Yes we're monitoring it as members are importing and can see the issues. We'll be fixing up these issues over the next few days, you should even be able to see some of these imported posts automatically getting cleaned up.
ReplyDeleteThe "topics mapping" is a known issue we unfortunately cannot get around because in the Google Takeout export there is no association from the Post to the topic, only the community. We had to put all posts in the first available topic. We explain this in this post:
lifecloud.site - What to Expect After an Import - Message by LifeCloud - LifeCloud
In that post we also explain about the videos and images in that they are "linked to" and not downloaded. However for the YouTube videos we are embed to "embed" them and we'll be also fixing those up soon so that you should be able to play the Youtube videos right in each post.

ReplyDeleteMobile and slow / intermittent / high-cost Internet service users are a case I've been watching closely. Sounds as if LifeCloud may be a life-line for that case.
Javan Joel What if any re-export options do you provide? I realise you'd likely prefer users and communities stayed with you, but credible case for being able to readily move on or off platforms is something I'm rating highly.
Keep in mind that the Plexodus effort will likely extend beyond just G+, I see this as a first-use-case, but a base for future building.
Edward Morbius Our policy is that users own their own data (unless it's copyrighted elsewhere of course). A UI to automatically download all your data (similar to Google Takeout) is in the works. In the meantime if someone were to ask for it we'd provide a zip file for them with everything.

Javan Joel that's the purpose of a community... to have others contribute... with 650 members and 100+ contributors since 2012, with many already off G+, this will never happen... ;-) That's why I'm migrating AMF to WordPress mainly...

If LifeCloud has the ability to easily import all your stuff and even re-associate those posts with previous members why would you even want to use Wordpress? I'm sure a lot of your members/contributors would love to know they still have an interactive community they can go to and Wordpress will be static.
ReplyDeleteJavan Joel am using the Friends+ Me Google+ Exporter - so far migrated something like 2000 posts (from community, pages, collections...). As I'm a perfectionnist: I rework/clean each & every post so that it fits what I want to publish. What's most important to me is being "public". A community behind closed doors (even if AMF is clearly moderated) has no value. As you probably well know, most of the people are "viewers" only, they don't interact. So to me, so far, LifeCloud is a good backup solution, till my WP blog is fully operating... I can't see how/why/what for, most of the members would join. Obviously I could have migrated to Facebook, but not my way of doing things... G+ has been a great repository of content over the years, in particular for pushing a "niche" like African music(s). Now that it's soon gone, I need to keep openess & control. I checked pods, I checked other so-called social experiments. Don't believe answer my "feelings"...

As long as you keep the page public users will be able to access it.
Fact is WP is not very interactive and a pain to deal with in making updates/changes (as I'm sure you're experiencing now). What else are you looking for?
Javan Joel I've been managing WP blogs for years. Have almost 10 at the moment for myself our customers (artists, smallbusinesses, agencies...). I know the pros/cons but it's fine for me. For the AMF WP, started discussing with others if they want to participate and how... It's a process I can manage too, as I started working on communities since the old times of BBSs (Compuserve, MSN...)
