How About Blogger - I'm hoping that Goggle keeps Blogger because its the only thing that close to my website that I used to have which later had to close because of budget thing.

Will demise of G+ affect image uploads to Blogger? They were sharing same spot when I looked at my image archive - I hope I'm wrong though.

I'm posting and keep "diary" of my work and my progress over years on my work since 2009 and having Blogger on really a big thing to me.

I used to trust Google but no one can know when they sunset any of their product.

  1. If you are posting to your blog from Google Photos, you should be OK ... so far, Google has not announced any changes to Photos. (I wish I could trust that meant they will not make such changes in the future, but apparently "Don't be evil" is no longer their corporate slogan.)

  2. Just a quick glance at your blog reveals 3 things will be be broken or will at least change:

First and foremost you are using the Google+ Comments module.
Unfortunately Google nor Blogger have yet clarified what will happen to this functionality after the shutdown of Google+, even though we've asked and lobbied for more information about this through various channels. 'Learn more' links about this integration feature have been leading to 404 Not Found pages for a long time. (Also previously reported through Send Feedback and back-channels.)
Worst case scenario: you'll lose all previously made comments to your blog's articles, and creating new comments will be broken till you'll manually switch back to Blogger's own comments system.
In a slightly better scenario: your current comments will be retained as read-only and they'll automatically switch your blog back over to Blogger comments.
Best case scenario (at least that I can think of): the Google+ Comments system will be rebranded to something like Google Comments (so, without plus), and decoupled completely from Google+. Existing comments will be tied to the users' Google accounts rather than their Google+ profiles, and will be retained mostly as-is, though likely with any plus-mentions removed or just delinked. People will continue to be able to comment directly through their Google accounts through Google Sign-in.

Your 'Share' and 'G+ (+1)' buttons below every article will stop working. See https://developers.google.com/+/integrations-shutdown for relevant details. Again, this is something that Blogger afaik has not clearly indicated to its users, yet. Hopefully Blogger will automatically disable these modules automatically when the Google+ Web-integration features are shut down, else you might need to manually remove them through your layout/design editor. Updating your layout might be a good idea afterwards regardless, to make sure your design is still optimal.

Your 'About Me' block, specifically the 'Google+ Follow' item will be broken.
Again see https://developers.google.com/+/integrations-shutdown for some more details about the Google+ Web Integrations shutdown details.

What can or should you do?
First of all, contact Google in whatever ways you can think to raise their awareness of this issue. For instance try using the Send Feedback form from the relevant Blogger settings pages. If you have a Google One storage subscription, try contacting their personal support through it. (I've yet to do this myself).

Secondly, Hope for the Best, Prepare for the Worst:
    • Make a backup of your Blogger data through Google Data Takeout (https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout/custom/blogger). I haven't looked at what data is actually in it, and I doubt it would contain your comments, but it's always good to have a backup.
    • If you want to ensure you have a local backup of all the comments on your artices, go through all of your blog posts and manually copy them.
    • I'd advise you to wait with switching from the Google+ features to the native Blogger features till it's clear what happens after the shutdown, as switching now will definitely mean you'll lose for instance the comments. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/X_pPMqVvskx69tiKtSuKI8YGgtOXHh4275KdIIPs1MLnFWAktZGjwCaurOs9IlXY-7pQIJ3w6DC69BRVW_m8mU60Kwci0YrR2ND0=s0

  5. Here's one of the sections in your Blogger setting you can consider reporting through Send Feedback for clarification.
It refers to Google+ for several of the features there, most notably the Google+ Comments. The 'Learn more' link in the speech bubble popup leads to a missing help page. The same applies to the Learn More links in the (?) help sections of the other Google+ integration features, such as Share To Google+ and Users (see screenshot in next comment).https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Uh9KoYmIbXJKTDqGVAKAklI_jS49ruOOIwiPGmwmR1uJClmyxgh2PtEZEqqO02XPRs3zzMG2GbKtp2542jGHP1omM1f5xl8ou59=s0

  13. Kerem Go No problem. :) Ideally Google would've provided us with this information and more already, but sadly their regard for their consumers is insultingly low...

  14. Pat Kight Thank you so much and totally agree... I can't help not so say "what if?!" while using any google product... Drive, Photos, Gmail. They offered great services for free and I totally depend on Google world including my use of android tablet. I wonder how much damage they causing the trust of users with shutting down G+...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Filip H.F. Slagter I wonder about that. What happens to the G+ profile in Blogger.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Joe Frazee what happens to profiles in general is unclear, though there are some indications that they'll continue to provide some profile information even after the shutdown, similar to before the release of G+.
For instance the editing of your profile currently already occurs from aboutme.google.com rather than plus.google.com. Before GPlus we had our profile info available through profiles.google.com, and this URL is still working, though currently it redirects to the profiles on plus.google.com. I'm expecting them to disable this redirect after the shutdown, and provide (minimal) profile info via a standalone profiles.google.com page afterwards. But again, that's an assumption, and not something Google has provided official information about.

Theoretically any plus-mention in Blogger comments could thus also point to that, and plus.google.com profile urls could be set up to redirect to that.

Google+ profiles are all connected to a Google account, and thus any functionality and linked information could be detached and extracted to standalone features connected to your Google profile and accessible via a Google Sign-in.

  17. Filip H.F. Slagter As Pat Kight said above, "don't be evil" seems like not their motto anymore :-/

  18. . Filip H.F. Slagter Awesome work. Please note that there has been zero official announcements from Google aimed at Blogger users, about G+ closing down and the implications for them. Zero
